Here’s an update on the latest twist in the saga of the Biden administration‘s dance with emissions regulations. Picture this: the administration, in a move that had environmentalists practically throwing confetti, initially set out with grand plans to turn our roads into a sea of electric vehicles (EVs). The goal was to have two-thirds of new passenger vehicles humming silently and emission-free by 2032. And not just the cars you and I drive; they were aiming to get those big, burly medium-duty trucks, like the ones that deliver your Amazon packages, in on the action too. Even the behemoths of the road, the 18-wheelers, weren’t spared from this electric dream.
It seems like there’s been a bit of a backtrack. Reports are flying in that the Biden team is easing up on the gas… or should I say, the electric pedal? This pivot is apparently a nod to unions and automakers who’ve been saying, “Hey, slow down! We’re not quite ready for this electric future.”

These rules were so tight that carmakers faced a tough choice: go electric or cough up billions in fines. I think Plan C would be move to another country that doesn’t have crazy zealots in their government.
An EPA official was quoted as saying these were “the strongest-ever federal pollution technology standards for both cars and trucks.” Meanwhile, a chorus of Republican attorneys general, with Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia leading the charge, didn’t mince words, accusing President Biden of being “hell-bent on destroying America’s energy security and independence.” Talk about heating things up!
But here’s where the rubber meets the road: the administration is reportedly shifting gears to give manufacturers more time to ramp up their electric vehicle sales before 2030, though they’re still expected to hit zero emissions by 2032. Word on the street (or should I say, word from anonymous sources) is that the finalized legislation will make its grand entrance in early spring 2024.
Now, why the sudden slowdown? Automakers have been waving the flag, saying, “We need more time!” especially when it comes to setting up a national network of charging stations. And the unions? They’re eyeing a chance to unionize these futuristic electric car plants popping up.

So, this is yet another head fake by the Biden administration, which doesn’t care that most Americans do not want an electric vehicle.
As for actually getting those charging stations up and running, despite a hefty $7.5 billion tossed their way by Congress in 2021, the administration’s track record on lighting up even a single EV charger is, well, dim. With $2 billion already dispatched to various states, it seems there’s more talk than action, with construction still on the distant horizon.
The Zero Emission Transportation Association is throwing in their two cents, estimating a cool $30 billion is needed over the next decade for home charging rebates and grants. Meanwhile, on the manufacturing front, companies like Ford are hitting the brakes on EV production, with Ford shifting gears from its electric F-150 Lightning trucks back to good ol’ gas-powered vehicles. Toyota, initially humming the hybrid tune, has now decided to throw another $1 billion into the electric ring with a new SUV.
So, what do we make of all this? It’s like watching a prime-time drama unfold, with plot twists, turns, and a cast of characters ranging from government officials to big auto, all trying to navigate the road to a cleaner future. But as always, the devil’s in the details, and it seems those details are still being ironed out. Stay tuned, folks—it’s sure to be an interesting ride.
