HBO host Bill Maher did not hold back his criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during a CNN interview aired on Thursday night. Maher’s comments were part of his Friday episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where he took issue with what he perceived as dishonest and condescending behavior from both politicians.
The interview, which was hosted by CNN’s Dana Bash, marked Harris’s first major public appearance since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection on July 21. The conversation took a controversial turn when Maher called out Walz for claiming he could relate to everyday Americans.

Maher, known for his candid and often abrasive commentary, didn’t stop there. He continued, “I don’t care by the way,” Maher added. “I’ve always said this about politics, they’re all going to lie they’re politics. It’s what they lie about. I don’t give a shit what you did during the Iraq War, you were in the Guard… I don’t understand why they just can’t and you’re just insulting my intelligence.”
Maher’s remarks come in the context of resurfacing questions about Walz’s 2005 retirement from the Minnesota National Guard. These questions gained renewed attention after a 2018 Facebook post by retired Army Command Sergeant Major Thomas Behrends. The post was thrust back into the spotlight when Harris selected Walz as her running mate. The situation escalated when Republican Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the party’s vice-presidential nominee, accused Walz of “dishonesty” during an Aug. 7 campaign event in Wisconsin. Vance highlighted a video posted on Aug. 6 by the Harris-Walz campaign, where Walz called for a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” implying he had carried them “in war.”
Maher also criticized Harris’s responses during the interview, particularly when Bash asked how she reacted to Biden’s decision not to run for reelection and about her apparent flip-flop on hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking.

No, you didn’t,” Maher said of Harris’ response. “You know, I mean, fracking. I mean, Dana Bash had her dead to rights. It’s like, you said this, I have the quote, I’m reading it to you, you said there should be a ban on fracking. Why can’t they just go, ‘Yeah, you know what, I got it wrong, I was talking to uh the wrong people?’”

Maher further pressed on Harris’s inconsistency on fracking, a contentious issue in American politics. “You know, I mean, fracking. I mean, Dana Bash had her dead to rights. It’s like, you said this, I have the quote, I’m reading it to you, you said there should be a ban on fracking. Why can’t they just go, ‘Yeah, you know what, I got it wrong, I was talking to uh the wrong people?’” Maher questioned, suggesting that Harris should own up to her past statements instead of dodging the issue.
In a final jab, Maher joked that Harris could explain away the high turnover of staff during her time as vice president by claiming they gave her bad information about fracking and were subsequently fired. His humor underscores the widespread perception of chaos and inconsistency within Harris’s team.
Maher’s critique highlights a broader frustration among voters and commentators with politicians who seem disconnected from reality or unwilling to admit their mistakes. As the 2024 election cycle unfolds, these moments of public scrutiny are likely to shape the narratives surrounding key candidates and their campaigns.
