Here’s a story that’ll make you double-check your neighbor’s Facebook rants. A Minnesota dad, Anthony Nephew, 46, went from keyboard warrior to full-blown tragedy when he killed his wife, ex-girlfriend, two sons, and then himself. Authorities discovered the carnage in Duluth last week, spanning two homes just blocks apart.
Now, before you think this guy just snapped out of nowhere, Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa set the record straight: Anthony had a “pattern of mental health issues.” Oh, really? Shocking. This is why we can’t skip therapy, people.

Over at the family’s home nearby, they discovered his wife Kathryn, 45, and their little boy, Oliver, who was just seven. Anthony? He went out with a self-inflicted gunshot wound—the classic “if I can’t have peace, no one can” energy.
Let’s add some intrigue to this grim tale: Anthony had been ranting online about Trump, Republicans, religion, and dystopian nightmares. His Facebook posts were practically begging for a wellness check. In one particularly melodramatic post, he wrote, “My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion.” Well, okay then. Subtlety was clearly not his strong suit.
46-year-old Anthony Nephew allegedly “k*lled his two sons as well as his current and former partner before turning the gun on himself” on Thursday.

He continued, “I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch, or crucified on a burning cross.” Sir, this is Facebook, not your therapy journal.
He added, “Having people actually believe that I or my child are Satan or, the anti-Christ or whatever their favorite color of boogie man they are afraid are this week.”
Anthony also had thoughts about women and politics. He accused Republicans of “making it harder for women to leave” abusive relationships and threw in a cringe “Gilead here we come,” referencing the dystopian nightmare fuel that is The Handmaid’s Tale. You know, because every political hot take needs a sprinkle of Hulu drama.
He wasn’t done. This guy shared a post featuring Barack Obama, Trump, Biden, and Kamala Harris. Under Trump’s face: “Hate.” Under the Democrats? “Hope,” “Heal,” and “Grow.” If memes were a personality, Anthony’s would be aggressively online.
But here’s where things get chilling: Back in 2021, Anthony foreshadowed his violent end in an op-ed for the Duluth News Tribune. He wrote, “For millions of Americans, a breakdown leads to suicide—or homicide before suicide.” I guess we are supposed to thank you for the heads-up.
He went on to say, “Mental health in this country is stigmatized, ignored, or treated as a burden for the individual to bear alone, with little help and less understanding.” Truer words, but maybe not the manifesto vibe we needed.
As for the motive? Police are scratching their heads. No note, no explanation, just a trail of heartbreak and unanswered questions in Duluth—a city of about 90,000 people, now forever associated with one man’s spiral.
The silver lining? There’s “no ongoing threat to the community,” police said. So, sleep tight, Duluth. I guess.
Moral of the story? Maybe pay attention to those Facebook friends who post a little too much dystopian content. And maybe don’t dismiss mental health as just “a phase.” Because this is what happens when therapy isn’t sought or offered.
