Nina Jankowicz, who formerly led the Biden administration’s ill-fated “Disinformation Governance Board,” is collaborating with liberal activists to launch a new charity focused on “increasing the cost of lies that undermine our democracy.”
Jankowicz’s new organization, the American Sunlight Project, was just founded and sent a letter to the Republican-led House Oversight and Judiciary Committees on April 22 denouncing them for their investigations into individuals and organizations that promote censorship. Despite its emphasis on bipartisanship, the group’s personnel and advisory board are primarily made up of former members of left-wing activist organizations.
By establishing the “Disinformation Governance Board” in 2022, Jankowicz took the lead on a Department of Homeland Security initiative to combat purported disinformation. The experiment was canceled months later after being heavily condemned as a precursor to government-encouraged censorship.
Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney called the board a “terrible idea” that would send a message to the world that “we’re going to be spreading propaganda in our own country,” according to the Associated Press. “Rather than police our border, Homeland Security has decided to make policing Americans’ speech its top priority,” Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley stated around the same time.
Another point of contention at the time was that Jankowicz had herself propagated inaccurate narratives.
For example, Jankowicz said that the Hunter Biden laptop was simply a product of former President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. Since then, other sources, including the Daily Caller News Foundation, have authenticated the laptop.
VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELIn a tweet from 2017, Jankowicz also claimed that the flawed Steele dossier was the result of a Republican-funded effort.
When the Daily Caller News Foundation contacted Eddie Vale, a representative for The American Sunlight Project, he declined to reveal information on Jankowicz’s new operation’s future operations and financing.
“We will obviously share more publicly as things develop, but aren’t going to be showing everyone our entire playbook on day one,” he told the DCNF when asked if the organization would engage in political advertising or lobbying.
The organization told the New York Times that it would broadcast advertising about the dangers disinformation poses to the public.
Because The American Sunlight Project is a 501(c)(4) organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service, it is permitted to pay for advertisements supporting or opposing federal politicians under federal law.
Vale stated that the group’s immediate focus is on House Republicans who have blocked so-called misinformation research, urging them to share the transcripts of disinformation researchers they have questioned.
Republicans in the House, particularly the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, have utilized the power of subpoena to force those professing to research “disinformation” to testify under oath.
Vale declined to provide the DCNF with a detailed accounting of The American Sunlight Project’s financial resources, stating only that it has a budget of at least $1 million and has “been getting a steady stream of online donations” since its launch was announced.
Vale’s profile on his company’s website characterizes him as “a veteran of Democratic and progressive political and legislative campaigns,” which complicates The American Sunlight Project’s bipartisan image. Vale is also a former vice president of American Bridge, a research company that specializes in digging up information to harm conservatives, frequently for Democratic campaigns.
The American Sunlight Project’s cofounder, Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, is likewise from the left-wing activism industry. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was in charge of “organization-wide strategic communications and media relations” at Protect Democracy from 2020 to 2021.
According to the organization’s website, Protect Democracy is the joint operation of two different nonprofits: the 501(c)(3) Protect Democracy Project and the 501(c)(4) United to Protect Democracy.
Since its inception, Protect Democracy has received millions of dollars from Democratic megadonors, left-wing dark money networks, and George Soros’ philanthropic empire. According to the organization’s website, successful legal attempts were initiated to obstruct former President Trump’s border wall plans and to void any non-disclosure agreements from his 2016 presidential campaign.
The majority of The American Sunlight Project’s advisory board is similarly affiliated with the left.
Emily Horne, who was a Biden White House staffer from 2021 to 2022, serves on the organization’s advisory board. Ineke Mushovic is the executive director of Wide Angle Research, a left-wing NGO that generates messages geared at changing people’s minds about LGBT issues, abortion, weapons, and immigration, among other topics, and also serves on the board.
