Senator Chuck Schumer took to social media today to denounce the SAVE Act, a piece of legislation aimed at strengthening election integrity while preserving access to lawful voting. According to Schumer, these reforms amount to “Jim Crow laws.”

That accusation is not just reckless. It is historically backward.
Here is Schumer making the same types of claims last year.

It’s scandalously false to suggest that the SAVE Act—requiring proof of citizenship to vote in U.S. elections—is somehow an attempt to “revert to Jim Crow”

Notice how he didn’t mention at all that it was his party that was responsible for creating and enforcing Jim Crow laws in Democratic-run states.
Here are some of the ways the SAVE Act is going to make it easier for everyone to vote and harder to cheat.
The SAVE Act is going to pass…FINALLY!
What is the legislation going to do?

The SAVE Act focuses on verifying eligibility, securing ballots, and restoring public confidence in elections. It does not segregate voters. It does not bar anyone from voting based on race. It does not impose literacy tests, poll taxes, or racial exclusions. To label election integrity as “Jim Crow” is to empty the term of its meaning and replace history with hysteria.
And that brings us to an uncomfortable truth Democrats would rather avoid.
Jim Crow Was a Democratic Project
Jim Crow laws were not invented by conservatives in general or Republicans in particular. They were written, passed, enforced, and defended by Democrats. Specifically, by Democratic state governments across the American South for nearly a century.
From the 1890s through the 1960s, Southern state legislatures were overwhelmingly Democratic. Governors were Democratic. Courts were Democratic. Sheriffs and election officials were Democratic. The laws that segregated schools, barred Black Americans from voting, and enforced racial hierarchy were Democratic statutes.
This was not accidental. It was deliberate governance.
When Democrats regained control of Southern states after Reconstruction, they moved quickly to undo Black political participation. They imposed literacy tests designed to fail Black voters. They enacted poll taxes that priced poor citizens out of elections. They created grandfather clauses that exempted white voters while excluding everyone else. They enforced “white primaries” that explicitly barred Black Americans from Democratic elections, which in one-party states meant exclusion from the political process entirely.
That system had a name. Jim Crow.
Republicans Fought Jim Crow Year After Year
While Democrats ran the Jim Crow South, Republicans opposed segregation in law and in Congress. This is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of voting records.
Republicans supported Reconstruction. Republicans passed the Civil Rights Acts of the 1860s. Republicans pushed federal enforcement when Southern Democrats resisted. Republicans repeatedly introduced anti-lynching legislation, only to see it blocked by Democratic filibusters. Republicans voted overwhelmingly in favor of civil rights protections throughout the twentieth century.
When landmark civil rights laws finally passed, it happened because Republicans and a minority of Democrats overcame massive Democratic resistance from the South. That resistance was not symbolic. It was organized, sustained, and openly justified in the language of segregation.
There is no honest reading of history where Republicans were the architects of Jim Crow. They were the opposition.
Calling Election Integrity “Jim Crow” Is a Smear
By calling the SAVE Act “Jim Crow,” Senator Schumer is not defending civil rights. He is cheapening them.
Jim Crow was about denying lawful citizens the vote based on race. Election integrity laws are about ensuring that lawful votes are counted and unlawful ones are not. One is discrimination by design. The other is the foundation of a functioning republic.
The comparison collapses the moment facts enter the room.
If Democrats truly cared about historical accuracy, they would stop using Jim Crow as a rhetorical shield. If they cared about honesty, they would acknowledge their party’s central role in creating and sustaining that system. And if they cared about voters, they would welcome transparency and security rather than reflexively opposing it.
The Real Irony
The real irony is this. The same party that once used election laws to exclude citizens now accuses others of doing the same, even when the policies have nothing in common.
Here’s Schumer calling for amnesty for all illegal aliens in the United States.

Jim Crow was real. It was brutal. And it was Democratic.
Pretending otherwise does not honor history. It rewrites it.
