Conan O’Brien kept things mostly neutral while hosting the Oscars on Sunday night—well, mostly. He did manage to sneak in one subtle jab at President Donald Trump and Russia, because let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be an awards show without the Hollywood libnuts attacking Trump.
The joke came after Anora, the fan-favorite film about a prostitute marrying a Russian oligarch, picked up two Oscars for editing and original screenplay. Not a bad night for Anora!
Conan took the opportunity to crack a joke, saying, “Anora is having a good night. Two wins already. I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian.”

Of course, this didn’t go unnoticed by critics of President Trump, who have long accused him of being too soft on Vladimir Putin—especially regarding his push for a peace deal in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion. They’ve framed it as a sign of Trump’s supposed deference to the Russian leader.
So, was Conan’s joke just a harmless quip, or was he serving up some thinly veiled political commentary? Either way, he got the laugh—and let’s be real, that’s what he was aiming for.
