He tried to one-up Republicans in Texas by launching his own aggressive redistricting play. The GOP in Texas just reworked its maps, with Trump’s nod, and picked up five new House seats heading into 2026.
Newsom’s counter? A scheme he called the “Election Rigging Response Act.” Not kidding. The plan was to blow past California’s independent redistricting commission, a system voters themselves wrote into the state constitution, and instead shove that power back into the hands of Sacramento politicians. Why? To rig up five new Democrat seats and cancel out what Republicans gained in Texas.
And then, in broad daylight, Newsom slammed the GOP’s map efforts as an “assault on democracy.” He said that while trying to do the same thing on his own turf. You can’t make this stuff up.
Voters Weren’t Buying It
Here’s what happened next. People in California, deep-blue California, didn’t fall for it. A new POLITICO-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab shows 64% of California voters oppose Newsom’s redistricting plan. That’s not a normal number. That’s a political beatdown. More than 70% of independents said they’d vote no. Only 36% support the move.
That’s what I call the voters sending a message. Californians, even the liberal ones, aren’t okay with being played like this. And if Newsom had dreams of running in 2028? Good luck. Those just got torched.

And then, because it could still get worse, Newsom goes on to admit that someone sent him a “Trump 2028” hat. It was obviously a joke, but he didn’t take it that way. He looked flustered. Bitter. Instead of brushing it off, he let it rattle him. Another unforced error. Another moment where he looked like he was losing his cool.
Why Democrats Are Nervous Right Now
So here’s the truth: Democrats are out of options. They’ve pushed gerrymandering as far as they can in states like California. Quietly redrawn maps for years using race to create new districts while at the same time breaking up conservative districts. While they were doing that, they would yell about Republicans for doing the same thing. But now? Now the GOP is pushing back. And it’s working.
Texas alone gives Republicans in the House in DC five more seats. Ohio might add two or three. Florida, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana are all gearing up for their own redistricting pushes. And even if Newsom’s plan passed? Republicans would still come out ahead.

Newsom’s “Election Rigging Response Act” wasn’t just a bad idea. It ripped the mask off the game Democrats have been playing for years. Now that Republicans are using legal constitutional tools to fight back, the numbers just don’t work for the Left anymore.
