After a vote on the House Floor on Tuesday, Matt Gaetz‘s Motion to Vacate the Chair against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has Passed by a vote of 216 – 210. Five Republicans sided with the Democrats.
Gaetz has submitted his much-anticipated Motion to Vacate the Chair against Speaker McCarthy during Monday’s House sessions.
The vote on this Motion to Vacate was brought to the floor on Tuesday by House Leadership. Members then voted for fifteen minutes on a resolution to table Gaetz’s resolution to Vacate, which McCarthy and his supporters defeated 208-218. After debating the Motion for an hour, the House voted alphabetically by roll call.
One member of the House moved to postpone the vote on Gaetz’s Motion to Vacate, and eleven House Republicans voted NO, paving the way for Gaetz’s resolution to eventually pass.
Here are the eleven Republicans who voted against the motion to table it:
Andy Biggs (AZ) and Ken Buck (CO) Warren Davidson (OH) Tim Burchett (TN) Eli Crane (AZ) Florida Representative Matt Gaetz Cory Mills (FL) and Bob Good (VA) Nancy Mace (South Carolina) Victoria Spartz (IN) and Matt Rosendale (MT)

McCarthy voiced concern about his impending ouster, saying, “If five Republicans go with Democrats, then I’m out.”
After time was set aside for debate on the subject, Representatives Gaetz and Bob Good (R-VA) took the lead, calling for Speaker McCarthy’s removal. The one-hour debate featured several representatives from both sides of the issue.
Representative Tom Cole (R-OK) began the argument by claiming to be among the large majority of Republicans who backed McCarthy and that the MAGA wing party was attempting to “plunge us into chaos.”
The RINOs have lost touch with Republican voters.
“Chaos is Speaker McCarthy,” Gaetz responded. “Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word.”
Jim Jordan (R-OH) said, “McCarthy has been rock solid,” adding, “We have done the oversight that we were supposed to do.”
Jordan praised McCarthy for doing what every Republican should do.
Andy Biggs (R-AZ) also chimed in, mentioning the wide-open border where drugs, criminals, human smugglers, and terrorists pass through, as well as a Cochise County, Arizona deputy who was critically injured in the line of duty two nights ago as a result of McCarthy’s open border and the “suboptimal” spending path that remains unchanged. McCarthy was also chastised by Biggs for breaching his promise and failing to “restore fiscal sanity.” Biggs ended his remarks by advising his colleagues, “Bet on reality. I cannot support the Speaker anymore”
Now, without a Speaker, the House can not conduct any business until they elect a new one. That means expelling Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) for pulling the fire alarm during an important House session to avert a shutdown and other business of the people.
The other problem I have is this makes history as it is the first time in history a House speaker has been removed, and he was a Republican and removed by Republicans. And lastly, the majority of Freedom Caucus members (the House conservatives) disagreed with Gaetz’s actions to remove McCarthy.
