One of Donald Trump‘s lawyers rejoiced after the January 6 House Select Committee withdrew its subpoena against the former president.
Attorney Harmeet Dhillon responded after Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chairman of the committee investigating the Capitol riot, revealed the committee will abandon its efforts to compel Trump to testify and hand over records related to its investigation.
Thompson informed Trump’s legal team that the panel was removing its subpoena because its investigation into the insurrection was complete. In reality, they probably didn’t want him to speak in front of the committee.
There was no insurrection. It was a two-and-a-half-hour riot of less than 9% of the protest numbers.
The clock was also ticking for the former president to comply, as the committee will close on January 3, 2023, when the GOP wins control of the House.
Trump filed a lawsuit against the January 6 committee in November, attempting to stop the panel’s subpoena.

“After my firm filed suit on separation of powers grounds to block January 6 House Select Committee’s illegitimate subpoena to President Trump over his activities while president— the committee waved the white flag & withdrew subpoena. We were confident of victory”

At the conclusion of their 9th presentation in October, the panel voted to subpoena Trump.
The committee filed a criminal referral to the Department of Justice earlier this month, proposing that Trump be charged with four crimes, including conspiracy to defraud the government, and inciting or assisting an insurrection.
The panel also accused Trump of being the leader of a “multi-part conspiracy” to alter the 2020 election results and the “central cause” of the January 6 insurrection in an 845-page report released on December 23. Of course, that’s all a bunch of nonsense. They had to do Olympic-style stretching to come up with the charges based on the facts.
“As you may know, the select committee has concluded its hearings, released its final report, and will very soon reach its conclusion,” Thompson said in his letter confirming the removal of the subpoena.
“In light of the imminent end of our investigation, the select committee can no longer pursue the specific information covered by the subpoena.”
Trump also praised the withdrawal of the subpoena against him, albeit while promoting a conspiracy theory that the FBI was complicit in manipulating the last election against him.
“Was just advised that the Unselect Committee of political Thugs has withdrawn the Subpoena of me concerning the January 6th Protest of the CROOKED 2020 Presidential Election,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“They probably did so because they knew I did nothing wrong, or they were about to lose in Court. Perhaps the FBI’s involvement in RIGGING the Election played into their decision. In any event, the Subpoena is DEAD!”
