I have to laugh now as I had previously watched a Republican and a Democratic strategist go at it over Florida. The Republican said it would be a blowout because the Hispanic vote shifted so sharply.
But, the Democrat disagreed wholeheartedly, claiming that Cubans and other Hispanics were sticking with Democrats and the races would be close. Boy, was he wrong? In fact, both Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio both won Miami-Dade county, which is unheard of for Republicans.
And as an added bonus, Republicans picked up four of the House seats in the state without losing any. Republicans only needed five pickups to take the House majority.
That gives the Republicans 20 of the 28 House seats in Florida. Not a bad night for Republicans in the Sunshine State. It is now safe to say that Florida is no longer a swing state. It wasn’t even close.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis swiftly trounced Democrat Charlie Crist on Tuesday night, a win that will shape Florida politics likely for years and sets the Republican governor up for a probable 2024 presidential run.
DeSantis defeated Crist by a nearly 20 percent margin — 59 to 40 — a stunning margin that was the widest margin in a Florida gubernatorial race since Jeb Bush won by nearly 13 points in 2002. DeSantis also won the Democratic stronghold of Miami-Dade County, another first for Republicans since Bush did it that same year.
DeSantis was greeted with thunderous applause by a huge, raucous crowd at his election night party at the Tampa Convention Center that advisers say was designed less for a reelection party and more as a preview of what’s to come: a 2024 presidential run.
Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has won a third term, defeating U.S. Rep. Val Demings and holding a key seat as the GOP tried to regain control of a closely divided Senate.
Rubio, 51, faced perhaps his toughest battle since he was first elected in 2010 after serving as the Florida House speaker. Once a presidential hopeful in 2016, Rubio’s name is less often mentioned as a potential 2024 candidate.
Rubio ran a campaign pulled from the Republican playbook, tying Demings to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Joe Biden and hammering her on issues like spending, rising inflation and a crisis at the southern border.
