Oh, how the tables have turned. Liz Cheney once hailed as the media’s darling and viewed as “the future of the Republican Party,” is now facing a recommendation for a federal criminal investigation. The same Liz Cheney who practically auditioned for the role of America’s Moral Compass during her stint as Vice Chair of the January 6 UnSelect Committee. Life comes at you fast, doesn’t it?
Let’s talk about the January 6 Committee for a second. Some saw it as a noble quest for truth and justice; others saw it as a partisan circus missing only cotton candy and a clown car. At the heart of it all? Liz Cheney, who now faces allegations of witness tampering.
Cheney took it upon herself to guide star witness Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, allegedly bypassing Hutchinson’s legal counsel. Because, you know, who needs a lawyer when you have Liz Cheney offering unsolicited legal services? Such actions, if proven, fit the definition of witness tampering—a serious offense that casts doubt on the integrity of the entire committee.

According to text messages, that appear to be from the encrypted messaging app “Signal,” between Hutchinson and Farah Griffin obtained by the Subcommittee, Cheney agreed to communicate with Hutchinson through Farah Griffin.However, it appears that Cheney knew communicating with Hutchinson while Hutchinson was represented by an attorney and a subject of the Select Committee’s investigation, without going through Hutchinson’s attorney, would be unethical. This is evident by Farah Griffin’s text to Hutchinson that Cheney’s “one concern was so long as [sic] you have counsel, she can’t really ethically talk to you without him.”?

While Hutchinson revealed the general timing of these conversations in her book, the extent and content of their communication was never previously disclosed.
When Hutchinson texted Cheney, she was still represented by Passantino which, Cheney knew. Cheney and Hutchinson communicated directly for days without Passantino’s knowledge. Subsequently, Cheney provided Hutchison with new attorneys from Alston and Bird—pro bono.
After Hutchinson switched attorneys at Cheney’s direction, the Select Committee needed to ensure Hutchinson’s credibility as a witness and explain away her changed testimony. To do this, the Select Committee needed to create a new narrative that would make Passantino the scapegoat. They manufactured the story that Passantino gave Hutchinson faulty advice — such as instructing Hutchinson to withhold information, to misrepresent her testimony, and even that Passantino implied he would help Hutchinson with employment in return for favorable testimony. Contrary to the Select Committee’s and Hutchinson’s narrative, however, the Subcommittee obtained messages between Farah Griffin and Hutchinson where Hutchinson admits that Passantino was acting in her best interest and that she agreed with his counsel.
The Subcommittee has reviewed relevant documents revealing that both bar complaints filed against Passantino in Washington D.C. and Georgia were “dismissed” without imposing any penalties against Passantio. Instead of Cheney facing scrutiny for unethically communicating with Hutchinson behind the back of her legal representation, Cheney used the weight of the Select Committee to pressure the D.C. Bar to investigate her star witness’s scapegoat. This was all to make Hutchinson seem credible while destroying the credibility of any dissenting voice, and that meant attacking the career of anyone who stood in the way of the Select Committee’s narrative.
The committee is also accused of withholding exculpatory evidence that could’ve cleared Trump, like his request for 10,000 National Guard troops to secure the Capitol. That was conveniently missing from the report. It makes you wonder if their focus was uncovering the truth or just doing everything they could to get even with Trump due to severe levels of TDS.
For years, political elites like Cheney were untouchable. Meanwhile, the everyday Americans, often referred to as the “deplorables,” suffered the consequences. But now? Oh, the fall of the mighty.
Cheney’s recommendation for prosecution comes just as January 6 defendants are dreaming of pardons from a Trump 2.0 administration. This shift reflects a larger movement where the populist base, long marginalized, is reclaiming its voice and influence. Translation: The swamp is finally getting drained, one neocon at a time.
This is the part where the proud are humbled and the humble are elevated. Liz Cheney? Humbled. Trump’s base? elevated. This isn’t just political theater; it’s a full-blown culture shift.
Back in 2021, the media painted Cheney as the GOP’s white knight, galloping in to save the party from Trump’s “populist spell.” Fast forward to 2022, and she couldn’t even save her own congressional seat, losing her primary by a landslide to Harriet Hageman whom Trump fully endorsed. The message from voters was loud and clear: Bye, Felicia.
Meanwhile, Trump was out here playing the comeback kid. While Cheney was busy burning bridges, Trump was solidifying his hold on the GOP. Polls showed his popularity among Republicans actually grew post-January 6. For Trump supporters, his calls for peace on January 6 and his unwavering stance on election integrity cemented his role as the leader of a populist revolution.

You’d think January 6 would’ve hurt Trump, but nope—it only made him stronger. For his supporters, that day wasn’t just a chaotic episode; it became a rallying cry against the elites. It highlighted the stark divide between ‘We the People’ and the political elites.
Even some on the left couldn’t help but admit it. As anniversary articles rolled out, they acknowledged that January 6 didn’t weaken Trump. If anything, it solidified his grip on the GOP, turning it into a working-class, populist movement. Who knew a day so controversial could be such a PR win?
Liz Cheney’s political saga is a cautionary tale for anyone who thinks they can sideline the populist movement. Her actions on the January 6 Committee, combined with her tone-deaf dismissal of the GOP base, left her isolated—and now potentially in legal hot water.
