José Andrés, a chef and humanitarian who is renowned for transforming bite-sized appetizers, also known as tapas, into a culinary movement and providing food in crisis zones, recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s most prestigious civilian award.
Back in September, the Secret Service was busy channeling its inner action movie at Donald Trump’s golf club, foiling an armed threat in a bizarre twist involving a suspect, Ryan Routh, who somehow has a photo circulating with Andrés. Because, of course, 2023 couldn’t just end without something weird like that.
Let’s set the scene: José Andrés gets honored at a White House ceremony on Saturday for, you know, being amazing—serving meals in disaster zones and proving that food is more than just fuel; it’s hope.
But he’s now in a photo with a guy a Secret Service team at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club intercepted who was carrying an AR-15-style rifle. He didn’t fire, but that didn’t stop the agents from showing him the door—swiftly, with handcuffs and all. Routh ditched his gun and hopped in an SUV like he was in a Fast & Furious sequel, but law enforcement caught up with him nearby.
So, what’s the story here? How could this chef, a living patron saint of delivering food to people who really need it, be posing with a guy who tried to assassinate the former and now next president of the United States?

Coincidence? Probably. Weird? Absolutely.
For those who don’t know, José Andrés is basically the king of tapas in America. He’s the genius behind the well-known minibars in Washington, DC, which boast not one but two Michelin stars. That’s like having two Oscars, but for food. The Oscars would probably give you agita anyway, like they do for me. Oh, and when he’s not running restaurants, he’s out there feeding entire towns through his nonprofit, World Central Kitchen. Disaster strikes? He shows up with pots and pans.
Andrés isn’t new to accolades either. He picked up the National Humanities Medal back in 2015 and was appointed co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in 2022. Clearly, this guy’s resume is as stacked as his paella.
President Biden, never one to skimp on a star-studded guest list, handed out 19 Presidential Medals of Freedom over the weekend. The honorees? A mix of icons from science, politics, sports, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
But two other people were listed this year, people I consider evil, are Hillary Clinton and George Soros. Why on God’s blue and green earth would those two purveyors of darkness and destruction be on the same list as Denzel Washington, Jane Goodall, Magic Johnson, and Robert Francis Kennedy? The former two should be on America’s Most Wanted list for the damage they have caused and continue to cause our country.
Someone needs to investigate what Andrés was doing posing with a potential presidential assassin.
