Dan Bongino completed his final day as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Saturday. By Sunday, he was officially back in civilian life, closing out a public service role that lasted less than a year.
His departure was not a surprise. Bongino had already announced in mid-December that his time with the bureau would end in the new year. That plan became official when he marked the moment publicly with a final message on X.
The message was brief, but the meaning was clear. After months of speculation, Bongino chose to close the chapter on his own terms. It was a quiet but deliberate moment that signaled a return to familiar ground and a new phase outside the walls of Washington.
“It was a busy last day on the job,” Bongino said. “This will be my last post on this account. Tomorrow I return to civilian life.”
“It’s been an incredible year thanks to the leadership and decisiveness of President Trump,” Bongino added. “It was the honor of a lifetime to work with Director Patel, and to serve you, the American people. See you on the other side.”

President Donald Trump responded to Bongino’s exit with words of praise, reflecting on Bongino’s performance since stepping into the role in March.
“Dan did a great job,” Trump said. “I think he wants to go back to his show.”
Before leaving the position, Bongino openly discussed the personal toll the job had taken. He explained that the demands of the role affected his daily routine and placed heavy pressure on his family life.
“I gave up everything for this,” Bongino told “Fox & Friends” in a May appearance.
“I stare at these four walls all day in D.C., by myself, divorced from my wife — not divorced, but I mean separated — and it’s hard,” Bongino added. “I mean, we love each other, and it’s hard to be apart.”
Those comments revealed the weight that came with the position. Bongino’s experience showed that the role required more than professional commitment. It also demanded personal sacrifice that followed him long after the workday ended.
