The Trump administration is preparing a major election-security effort for the November midterm elections, announcing plans for the Department of Justice to deploy a record 1,000 election monitors across the country.
The unprecedented deployment signals that election integrity will be a major focus heading into November. With control of Congress at stake and concerns over voting procedures still fueling political debate across the country, the administration appears determined to put additional federal eyes on the process and ensure election officials are following federal law.

Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, announced that the monitors will be sent throughout the country to watch for compliance with the Voting Rights Act. The size of the deployment tells you something about how seriously the administration is taking election security. According to CBS News, the planned 1,000-person operation is nearly four times the number of monitors used during the 2022 midterms. It also surpasses the 714 monitors deployed in 2024 to oversee compliance with federal election laws.
And there is a reason the administration is taking this route.
The move comes while the SAVE America Act remains stalled in the Senate. The sweeping election-security legislation contains provisions that have received broad public support, yet Republican holdouts refused to eliminate the silent filibuster needed to move the legislation forward.
President Donald Trump made passage of the SAVE Act one of his major priorities for 2026. He called on Senate Republicans to use every available option to get the legislation through Congress and onto his desk. That did not happen. Centrist Republicans refused to move, leaving the administration to pursue election-security measures through the authority already available to it.
