Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) was reportedly hospitalized after collapsing in San Francisco on Tuesday.
It’s not clear how bad the fall was, but according to TMZ, it was bad enough to require a trip to the hospital. She arrived home on Tuesday, and her exact health was unknown as of Wednesday morning.
This is far from the first time Feinstein, the Senate’s oldest sitting member, has dealt with health difficulties this year. The California senator announced in March that she had been diagnosed with shingles and was hospitalized as a result. She took a three-month hiatus from the Senate before returning in May.
She is the oldest member of Congress in either chamber. She has about 11 more falls to go before she reaches the Biden level.
Feinstein, 90, contracted encephalitis — an inflammation of the brain that can cause facial paralysis — during her rehabilitation, which “resolved itself shortly after she was released from the hospital,” according to her spokesperson, Adam Russell. She also had Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which happens when the shingles virus infects a facial nerve between the ears. This can wind up causing hearing problems.
During Senate proceedings, she has appeared bewildered at times, catching the attention of spectators. Feinstein has opted not to run for reelection to the Senate, and her term will finish at the beginning of 2025.
