President Joe Biden intends for the US military to build a US-operated pier off the shore of Gaza. The pier would then be utilized to transfer further humanitarian goods from ships onto trucks and into Palestinian territory. Increased assistance shipments are a top need in Gaza, which is experiencing severe food and medical shortages.
Is Biden using taxpayer money and our military to buy votes from angry Palestinian Americans?
Still, it’s worth wondering why the United States feels the need to construct a pier in order to bring additional aid to Gaza. Due to Israel’s protocols for aid monitoring, trucks attempting to deliver supplies to Gaza are frequently delayed and rerouted. This exacerbates the dire humanitarian situation on the ground.
The fact that Hamas always grabs supplies for its own use before anyone else gets anything complicates matters further, reducing the amount of aid distributed to the Palestinian people. The situation is grim. Child malnutrition and mortality rates are becoming major concerns, for example.
These problems exist because Hamas cares more about killing Jews than providing for their own constituents. Israel has provided water and electricity for Gaza because Hamas doesn’t care enough to do it.
However, the complexity of creating a temporary pier is enormous. While the Biden administration claims that no US military soldiers will enter Gaza to secure the truck debarking and unloading areas, someone’s got to do it.

Israel created a blockade off Gaza because Hamas would have weapons loaded on the ships delivering goods to the Palestinian people, weapons that would be used to kill Israelis. So, someone needs to search the goods coming into this new pier for weapons.
A far better choice appears to be for Israel to improve the efficiency of land channels into Gaza. American economic and military leverage appear to be adequate to persuade Israel to endorse this effort. However, given the absence of this method, it is likely that the Biden administration is attempting to send messages to both local and international audiences.
On the home front, the 2024 Biden presidential campaign is becoming increasingly concerned about Muslim voter dissatisfaction in swing states like Michigan. These voters want Israel’s campaign against Hamas to halt immediately, as well as a substantial increase in aid to Palestinians. At the same time, US allies in the Middle East and Europe are exerting tremendous pressure on the Biden administration to guarantee that additional aid reaches Gaza. The physical look of this dock, as well as daily humanitarian shipments, provides an opportunity for the administration to demonstrate physical support for Gazan citizens.
It also provides political cover for sustained Israeli military actions by reducing civilian suffering in concert with those operations. Finally, this may allow Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to deflect criticism from his coalition for allowing too much aid into Gaza via land means. Netanyahu can now rely on the US to manage those aid shipments, eliminating the need for Israel to do it itself.
Regardless, this attempt will be difficult, costly, and loaded with danger. Biden is most likely acting in this way because the loudmouth Palestinian supporters who shout, rant, and rave every day outside the White House intimidate him.
