Some House Democrats used Monday’s House Oversight and Accountability hearing on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to advocate for gun regulation in the context of former President Donald Trump’s assassination attempt.
The would-be assassin fired eight shots at Trump with an AR-style weapon, one of which pierced the top of his right ear.
Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) made only a passing reference to the shooter in his opening statement. Raskin cheapened the hearing by focusing on gun control instead of why the Secret Service failed to protect Trump at the Butler, Pa rally by using the term “AR-15” nearly a dozen times and insinuating that AR-15s are being used in mass shootings and the rifle is the problem.
“A weapon that can be used to commit a mass shooting at an event under the full protection of the Secret Service together with dozens of state and local police is obviously an intolerable threat to the rest of us who do not receive such protection and obviously does not belong in our communities,” Raskin told reporters.
Despite the gunman utilizing his father’s AR-15, Raskin advocated for universal background checks and the closure of the gun show “loophole.”
Raskin used the complete failure of the Secret Service to protect Trump as a reason to ban AR-15 rifles because, get this, they were used while the great Secret Service was protecting Donald Trump, even though the agency screwed up royally and actually failed to protect the former president. You can’t make this up. Gun grabbers like Raskin have no soul.

Washington, D.C., Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton said, “I condemn the political violence. It is a threat to democracy. I wanted to discuss one of the roots of political violence: guns.”
Wrong. The root cause of violence is a culture of violence. It isn’t caused by an inanimate object like a gun, but what’s in the hearts of people who misuse guns to commit crimes.
Cheatle got into a heated confrontation with Representative Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who opened his line of questioning by saying, “There are some things my friends on one particular side of the aisle don’t really want to talk about, like AR-15s and access to them by a 20-year-old or anybody for that matter.”
Connolly then asked Cheatle if the prevalence of firearms in the United States complicates her agency’s duty to protect political leaders. Cheatle claimed that the threat of firearms is not unique because it is something the Secret Service deals with on a daily basis, a comment that infuriated Connolly because it did not answer his questions.
“I didn’t ask that question. I’m not questioning the Second Amendment. I’m asking for a simple analysis.,” he said.
“Please answer the question,” Connolly said, after Connolly frequently asked Cheatle if American access to firearms makes her agents’ tasks difficult.
When Cheatle refused to give Connolly a direct answer, Connolly accused her of avoiding the question and stated that this has become a cause not to trust her continued employment as director.

Cheatle said during the hearing that the shooting was “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades,” but she also stated that she is the best candidate to run the law enforcement agency.
