Wow, talk about letting the mask slip! Last week, Democrat John Kerry, who’s President Joe Biden’s U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, decided to openly admit that the First Amendment—you know, that tiny little thing protecting free speech—is getting in the way of Democrats’ plans to fight so-called “disinformation.”
Kerry didn’t hold back when speaking at the World Economic Forum about Green Energy. He was asked by someone in the audience how they could tackle the problem of online “disinformation.” And boy, did Kerry give an answer that left some jaws on the floor.
“You know there’s a lot of discussion now about how you curb those entities to guarantee that you’re going to have some accountability on facts, etc.,” he said, in that polished political jargon. “But look, if people only go to one source, and the source they go to is sick, and, you know, has an agenda, and they’re putting out disinformation, our First Amendment stands as a major block to be able to just, you know, hammer it out of existence.”
Let’s pause for a second. He just said it. The First Amendment—one of the bedrock principles of American freedom—is a “block” that stops the government from erasing “disinformation.” Translation: Freedom of speech is standing in the way of the people who want to decide what you should and shouldn’t know. Yikes.
“So what we need is to win the ground, win the right to govern, by hopefully winning enough votes that you’re free to be able to implement change,” he added. Ah, yes, more votes means they can finally put the pesky First Amendment in its place. Perfectly reasonable, right?
But here’s the interesting part: Kerry claimed that this issue is “unique to democracies” because there’s an “absence of a sort of truth arbiter, and there’s no one who defines what facts really are.” Oh, because what we really need is a Ministry of Truth, right? Sorry, but that’s not how democracy—or the First Amendment—works.
