CNN anchor Jim Acosta made headlines on Tuesday with his big announcement: he’s leaving CNN after nearly 20 years. And, of course, in classic Acosta fashion, he couldn’t resist one final dramatic monologue. He urged his viewers to “stand up to tyrants” and “not give in to the lies.” Spoiler alert: this wasn’t about Raul Castro. It seemed like a parting jab at—you guessed it—President Donald Trump.
Acosta told viewers, “You may have seen some reports about me and this show, and after giving all of this some careful consideration… I have decided to move on.” Translation: CNN moved him out of his 10 a.m. slot, and the midnight gig wasn’t exactly his dream job. So, rather than taking what media insiders are calling a major demotion, Acosta decided to pack it up.

He reminisced about his “highlights” at CNN, notably skipping over his infamous sparring matches with Trump. Instead, he showed a photo from President Obama’s 2016 Cuba trip, where he questioned dictator Raul Castro. Acosta, the son of a Cuban refugee, declared, “It is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant.” Funny how he saved that line for Castro, not some of the other political figures he’s cozied up to over the years.
But don’t worry, he didn’t leave without a dramatic call to action. “Don’t give into the lies. Don’t give into the fear. Hold onto the truth and hope,” Acosta pleaded, urging viewers to record these statements and post them on social media. Because apparently, Jim thinks his audience is just waiting to launch a TikTok campaign in his honor.
Ironically, Acosta refers to Trump as a dictator and a tyrant, yet he was all in for President Joe Biden who was an actual dictator and tyrant. Biden forced Americans to get a vaccine that was experimental medicine. That’s something straight out of a Dr. Mengele horror movie. Trump never dreamed of doing something so tyrannical as that. Like a true fascist, Biden forced private corporations to censor the free speech of conservatives and anyone else who discussed things the Democrats didn’t like. Again, Trump never did anything remotely like that. After Hurricane Helene destroyed areas of North Carolina, Joe Biden ordered FEMA to ignore homes in need that had Trump signs on their lawn. Donald Trump would never have done such a thing. Joe Biden weaponized his Department of Justice to use lawfare against Trump, his election opponent. When that didn’t work, the Democrats allegedly shot Trump in the head. Donald Trump never did any of that. So, as Abilio, who is the real dictator and tyrant?

CNN, meanwhile, confirmed the news and threw some polite corporate gratitude his way: “Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a track record of standing up to authority.” Sounds nice, right? But insiders have a slightly different story. According to reports, CNN execs weren’t exactly sad to see him go. One source even claimed they were “apoplectic” that news of Acosta’s potential midnight demotion leaked to the press.
Acosta joined CNN in 2007 and rose to fame during Trump’s presidency, often acting as the poster child for what conservatives dubbed “fake news.” Whether it was calling Trump xenophobic for his COVID-19 rhetoric, complaining about Kim Kardashian being at the White House, or suggesting reporters chant, “We are not the enemy of the people,” Acosta rarely missed a chance to make himself the story.
Of course, his confrontational style led to plenty of infamous moments, including the 2018 incident where he refused to hand over a microphone during a press conference. The White House tried to revoke his press pass, CNN cried First Amendment, and Acosta got to keep his job. The drama didn’t end there. In 2019, he was widely mocked for posting a video meant to disprove Trump’s claims about the border crisis… only for the video to prove Trump’s point. You can’t make this stuff up.
Acosta’s antics didn’t go unrewarded, though. He scored a book deal, got himself on late-night talk shows, and became a darling of the anti-Trump resistance. In his memoir, The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America, Acosta defended his style, telling critics to “call me a showboater or a grandstander” because he was “performing a public service for the good of the country.” Humble as ever, right?
After Trump left office, Acosta was moved from the White House beat to a domestic correspondent role. And while the network still gave him airtime, it was clear the glory days were behind him. Earlier this month, Acosta gave a passionate monologue about the importance of the press after President Biden warned that “free press is crumbling” in his farewell address. Acosta seemed to suggest that democracy itself would be under attack if Trump returned to the White House. Because nothing says “defending democracy” like melodramatic cable news commentary.
Of course, Trump didn’t miss the opportunity to get in a few jabs on Truth Social. “Wow, really good news!” he wrote. “Jim Acosta, one of the worst and most dishonest reporters in journalistic history… has been relegated by CNN Fake News to the Midnight hour, ‘Death Valley.’” Trump added, “Word is that he wants to QUIT, and that would be even better. Jim is a major loser who will fail no matter where he ends up. Good luck, Jim.” Ouch.
It’s just one more reason to love Trump. He is a return hitter, and he’s a master at it. I think we can say that in the war between fake news and Donald Trump, Trump wins every time.
As for what’s next for Acosta, he hasn’t revealed his plans yet. But given his track record, don’t be surprised if he finds a way to stay in the spotlight. After all, Jim Acosta without a platform is like CNN without Trump: kind of lost. Maybe he’ll try to do a podcast like Don Lemon. Maybe the two of them can collaborate and gain a few hundred subscribers. You never know.
