Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) went on television Sunday to give his take on what happened with John Bolton. Schiff claimed the FBI raid on the former National Security Advisor’s home wasn’t just about Bolton at all, but proof of a broader effort to silence anyone bold enough to criticize President Donald Trump.
This all played out on NBC’s Meet the Press. Host Kristen Welker brought up the FBI search of Bolton’s home and office that happened last week and wanted Schiff’s thoughts.
Welker pointed out that Vice President J.D. Vance had already dismissed the idea that the raid was about retribution. She pushed Schiff on whether Americans should maybe let the investigation unfold before rushing to conclusions.
Schiff didn’t hold back. He responded, “I think this is clearly retribution. I mean, the idea that they just picked John Bolton, a prominent critic of the president, at random. What the president is trying to do here is very systematic, anyone who stands up to the president, anyone who criticizes the president issue gets the full weight of the federal government brought down on them.”
Then he gave examples. Schiff said, “So if you’re John Bolton, you get your home seized. If you on the Federal Reserve and won’t lower interest rates you get threatened with firing, if you’re a general and issue a report or the agency does casting doubt on the success of U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, you get fired. If you are the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and you give a jobs report that the president doesn’t like, you get fired. They’re essentially going after any critic, any opposition, in an effort to intimidate them. That’s what this is about. It’s not about Bolton, per se. It’s about anyone else that, like Bolton, might stand up to the president.”

VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELNow, the facts. Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, was searched early Friday morning by federal agents. Officials said the raid was carried out under the direction of FBI Director Kash Patel.
Naturally, this is getting a lot of attention. Bolton was a senior national security figure in Trump’s White House, and he’s been one of the loudest critics of the president since leaving. The raid triggered a fight in Washington. Supporters of the administration insist federal agents acted within their authority. Critics, like Schiff, claim it was all about punishing political opponents.
Bolton’s history with Trump isn’t exactly friendly. He served as national security advisor from April 2018 to September 2019, but he left after repeated clashes with Trump over foreign policy, especially on Iran, North Korea, and Afghanistan. Since then, Bolton hasn’t stopped voicing his disapproval.
This search is not happening in isolation. It comes during a bigger debate about how the FBI and Justice Department handle cases involving high-level government figures. Members of Congress from both sides are already weighing in, but, not surprisingly, the lines are drawn along party loyalty.
The Department of Justice hasn’t shared details about the scope of the investigation or if Bolton himself could face charges. The FBI won’t go beyond confirming the raid happened.
What’s next? Expect more fallout this week. Congress wants answers. The White House will be pressed about motives. Schiff and his fellow Democrats are clearly going to frame the raid as part of a bigger retaliation campaign against anyone who challenges Trump.
And here’s the reality: the investigation is still active. Federal authorities are giving no timeline for when, or if, more information will come out.
