So, Charlamagne Tha God of The Breakfast Club in New York City got into it with a caller this week. The topic? Joe Biden’s interesting decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, after months of promising he’d stay out of it. Spoiler alert: he didn’t.
The caller tried to justify the pardon, saying Biden had an epiphany after a lifetime of political wheeling and dealing: “his family was most important.” Sounds sweet, right? Not so fast. Charlamagne wasn’t buying it and called out Biden’s policies for hurting countless other families over the years. A mic drop moment? Pretty much.
LISTEN:
Let’s rewind: Biden co-sponsored the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, making sure people caught with drugs got some quality time behind bars. Oh, and let’s not forget the infamous 1994 crime bill, which experts say wasn’t exactly a beacon of racial equality. So, yeah, the irony isn’t lost on Charlamagne—or anyone else paying attention.
Here’s some more irony. Charlamagne supported Kamala over Trump in 2024 even though President Donald Trump signed the First Step Act in December 2018 to reform federal prisons and sentencing laws. The bill countered much of what Joe Biden did to black Americans by offering prisoners a second chance at life and early parole. Kamala Harris, as a prosecutor in California, was known for going after black men for marijuana charges and getting them harsh sentences. I guess Trump’s actions of signing the first criminal justice reform bill in a long time weren’t enough to impress Charlamagne to vote for the guy who did more for black Americans than Joe Biden or Kamala Harris could ever do.
VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL“Pardon Hunter? Cool. Now how about pardoning everyone in federal prison for nonviolent weed offenses?” Charlamagne said, not missing a beat. He added that doing so might “help [Biden’s] legacy, which is in shambles right now.” Ouch.
Biden, for his part, announced in October 2022 that he was pardoning people for simple marijuana possession, declaring, “No one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana.” Points for effort? Maybe. But Charlamagne’s clearly not convinced it’s enough.
The radio host has been vocal about Biden’s shaky track record, telling The New York Times in May that black voters might give Trump another look, thanks to his criminal justice reform. Trump’s 2018 bipartisan First Step Act helped reduce sentences for nonviolent drug offenders, and according to Charlamagne, “There’s people who actually saw family members and people they love actually get out of prison.”
Then there’s the whole mandatory minimum sentencing fiasco. Charlamagne didn’t let Biden forget his role in that mess either. “You cannot bring up President Biden without talking about the ’86 Anti-Drug Abuse Act, which introduced mandatory minimum sentences for crack cocaine, and the ’94 crime bill,” he said, reminding everyone that Biden was all-in on those policies. When Biden tried to deflect blame in an earlier interview, Charlamagne shot back with, “Yeah, and you were behind that one too!” Savage.
Now, let’s talk about Hunter. Biden claims his son was “singled out” by the justice system because of their relationship. Charlamagne wasn’t having it. “Hunter was singled out because he broke the law,” he said bluntly. He pointed out the obvious: Hunter had “an illegal gun and tax evasion charges.” You know, little things.
But Charlamagne didn’t stop there. He also took a swipe at Democrats for their holier-than-thou attitude. “I just want Democrats to stop acting like they are on this moral high ground politically when they have shown us they’re not,” he said. He mentioned Biden skipping the primary process and the whole Hunter pardon debacle. “Stop acting like y’all are the pure party and Republicans aren’t.” A truth bomb if there ever was one.
And finally, Charlamagne questioned whether Biden ever really believed Trump was the “threat to democracy” he’s been painted as, or if it was all just political theater. Given the president’s recent moves, it’s a fair question—and one that leaves us all wondering what’s next in this wild ride called American politics.
