CNN’s senior political hack and former Obama adviser David Axelrod told Anderson Cooper on Monday that Trump’s tariffs were the “beginning of the end” of his presidency.
Axelrod said, “The thing that people most voted for Donald Trump to do was to reduce costs. These tariffs are going to raise costs, and automobiles are a big component of that. So, it’s not surprising to me that he has to bail out of this one.”
He added, “It’s so interesting to me when you look back at the Biden administration and you look back at polling and Harry Enten can speak to this. You look back to that withdrawal from Afghanistan that that shambolic withdrawal from Afghanistan. And Biden’s numbers took a big hit, and they never recovered. And you wonder whether on April 2nd, you know, what he called Liberation day, but for the for the markets was kind of incineration day. You look back and wonder whether you look back at that, and what you find is that was the beginning of the end, that he never recovers because these economic numbers are devastating. So I see this as a as a kind of a small bailout from the position he put himself in. But there’s so much more to it, and I’m not sure there’s a way out for him.”
Despite Axelrod’s doom-and-gloom analysis, Trump’s policy team has repeatedly pointed out that the tariffs are part of a broader strategy to bring manufacturing jobs back to America, pressure foreign competitors like China, and reduce U.S. dependency on hostile nations. While Axelrod clutches his pearls over projected car prices, Trump’s supporters see the tariff plan, combined with the proposed middle-class tax cuts, as a bold move to boost American workers and lower income taxes for families earning under $200K a year.
Critics of Axelrod also note the irony of his Afghanistan comparison. Unlike Biden’s disastrous withdrawal that cost American lives and humiliated the nation on the world stage, Trump’s economic moves are a domestic strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s industrial base and shielding the middle class from globalist manipulation.
As usual, CNN’s coverage painted Trump’s economic maneuvers as catastrophic while conveniently ignoring the positive signs in manufacturing growth, investment, and wage increases already beginning to appear in states hardest hit by decades of outsourcing.

How many times have we heard from the Left on every issue, starting back in 2017, that this is the beginning of the end for Trump, and it was never true?
In the end, Axelrod’s latest predictions may wind up just like the countless other “Trump-is-finished” media narratives over the years — all noise, no results.

He hasn’t been right yet. What’s one more quack claim?

Somehow he ignores foreign tariffs on American goods… which is why we are here.
