Did former FBI Director James Comey just call for the assassination of President Trump?
On Thursday, Comey posted a bizarre photo to Instagram showing seashells arranged to spell out “86 47.” Online, people immediately flagged it as a not-so-subtle threat—“86” is well-known slang for eliminate, and “47” clearly refers to Trump’s potential as the 47th president.
So the question is simple: Was this a threat, a signal, or just another arrogant stunt from a disgraced bureaucrat who thinks he’s untouchable?
Donald Trump Jr took to X to show what Comey posted about his dad.
Just James Comey causally calling for my dad to be murdered.

Comey posted with the pic: “Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” Comey said in his caption.

Trump, now serving as the 47th President of the United States, is frequently identified by his presidential number. The number “86,” according to Merriam-Webster, is widely recognized as slang for “to eliminate or get rid of”—often with violent implications.
One person who didn’t miss the message was Donald Trump Jr., who posted on X: “Just James Comey causally calling for my dad to be murdered. This is who the Dem-Media worships. Demented!!!!”
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich also weighed in, writing: “While President Trump is currently on an international trip to the Middle East, the former FBI Director puts out what can clearly be interpreted as ‘a hit’ on the sitting President of the United States—a message etched in the sand. This is deeply concerning to all of us and is being taken seriously.”

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) didn’t let it slide, posting on X: “Because two assassination attempts were apparently not enough for these people,” along with a screenshot of Comey’s Instagram.

Comey, ever the innocent bystander, claimed he just happened to spot a “shell formation” on the beach—because apparently seashells naturally arrange themselves into veiled death threats. The post immediately sparked backlash and speculation, especially given Comey’s well-documented vendetta against Trump. After all, Trump did fire him back in 2017—how rude of the President to interrupt the Resistance fan club.
Comey then had the gall to post a response to the world’s reaction to his call for a presidential assassination:

A former FBI director claimed he saw a “shell formation” on the beach—but the post has ignited a firestorm of criticism and speculation, especially given his long-standing hostility toward President Trump. Comey, of course, was fired by Trump in 2017 during his first term in office.
Comey politicked his way to the top of the FBI, and now he wants us to believe he’s never heard that “86” means to kill? Please.
