There was a time when enforcing America’s immigration laws was not controversial. It was expected. It was bipartisan. And it was openly defended by Democratic presidents on the floor of Congress.
That reality has been deliberately erased by Democrats who would do anything to get power.
What replaced it is something far more dangerous: a political movement that treats illegal immigration as untouchable, federal law enforcement as illegitimate, and resistance to deportation as a moral duty. The transformation did not happen overnight. It happened in stages, and each stage pushed the Democratic Party further away from law, order, and reality.
This is how it happened.
When Democrats Still Believed in Borders
In his State of the Union address, Bill Clinton spoke plainly about illegal immigration. He warned that uncontrolled borders harmed American workers, strained public services, and undermined national sovereignty. He called for stronger enforcement and the removal of those in the country illegally.
That speech exists on video. No spin is required.

At the time, Democrats understood something fundamental: a nation that cannot enforce its borders cannot protect its citizens. Immigration laws were not optional. They were the law.
That consensus would not survive the next two decades. The Democratic Party has become increasingly radicalized since Clinton’s speech.
Obama Opens the Door and Redefines the Law
The shift accelerated under Barack Obama. While publicly claiming to support enforcement, his administration quietly redefined it. Deportation priorities were narrowed. In fact, Obama ordered illegals caught and turned away at the border to be counted as a “deportation” so that the administration could claim they had a record number of deportations. Executive actions replaced congressional authority. The message was clear, even if the language was soft.
Under Obama, hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens were allowed to remain. Entire categories of enforcement were effectively suspended. Among those admitted were more than 60,000 Somali nationals, many placed into communities already struggling with crime and economic pressure.
In 2012, Obama illegally created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program out of thin air by executive order. Executive orders must be written to execute the law, where the power comes from either the Constitution or the US Congress. Neither the Constitution nor Congress gave Obama the authority to create such a program.
He wasn’t done. Obama offered legal status to over 4 million illegal aliens already here.
This was not border security. It was selective enforcement. And selective enforcement is how laws die.
Trump Enforces the Law and Democrats Radicalize
Everything changed in 2016.
When Donald Trump was elected and began enforcing existing immigration laws, Democrats did not argue policy. They attacked legitimacy. Deportations were suddenly framed as cruelty. ICE agents were painted as villains. Federal law became something to resist, not respect.
Cities run by Democrats openly declared themselves sanctuary cities, refusing to cooperate with federal authorities. Local governments shielded illegal aliens from deportation and interfered with lawful enforcement.
Sanctuary cities directly conflict with the Constitution. Article I, Section 8, gives the federal government exclusive authority over immigration through “an uniform rule of naturalization.” States and cities do not get to override that power. Sanctuary city declarations do just that.
The Supremacy Clause makes this clear. When state or local policies interfere with a constitutional federal power, federal authority prevails. Immigration is not a shared jurisdiction. It is a federal one.
Sanctuary policies are not lawful discretion. They are an open defiance of the constitutional order.
This was not compassion. It was defiance.
By protecting illegal aliens from federal law, Democratic leaders made their cities magnets for unlawful entry and criminal exploitation. They also sent a clear signal to activists: obstruct enforcement, and you will be celebrated.
Biden Removes the Guardrails Entirely
Under Joe Biden, enforcement did not merely weaken. It collapsed.
Between 6.5 and 14 million illegal aliens entered the country in four years. Interior enforcement was gutted. Border deterrence disappeared. Deportations plummeted. The result was predictable: overwhelmed cities, soaring crime, human trafficking, and fentanyl flooding American streets.
The Biden administration kept lying to America that the border was secure.

This was not incompetence. It was progressive ideology.
And ideology always demands that enforcers be punished.
ICE Becomes the Enemy
That brings us to the present.
ICE agents are now routinely harassed, filmed, doxxed, and followed to their homes. Their families are targeted. Their names are leaked. In response, agents wear masks to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Democratic leaders call this “suspicious.” They claim agents are “hiding.”
In Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and across the country, Democratic mayors and governors have fueled unrest with reckless rhetoric.
Jacob Frey, Tim Walz, Karen Bass, and Gavin Newsom have all repeated variations of the same claim: that ICE is “disappearing innocent people” and acting outside the law.
Here is LA Mayor Karen Bass calling ICE operations The hunting of Latinos.
Here is Bass telling the American people that in her city, they do not make the distinction between US citizens and illegal aliens.
WATCH:
Watch California Governor Gavin Newsom as he speaks with former Obama Wingman AG Eric Holder spreading lies about what ICE is doing.
WATCH:
Here is Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey lashing out after an ICE agent shot and killed a woman during a federal immigration enforcement operation in his city. The woman, Renee Good, was blocking federal agents with her SUV and refused lawful orders to exit the vehicle. When she then drove toward an ICE agent — striking him and putting his life and the lives of other agents at risk — the agent fired in self-defense and killed her.
Instead of acknowledging the danger his city’s hostility toward federal law enforcement has created, Frey chose to posture and blame ICE, even dropping an expletive in public statements about the incident. He’s trying to contain a leftist narrative that blames federal agents for enforcing the law, not individuals who interfere with it.
WATCH:
Watch how Minnesota Governor Tim Walz publicly accused the federal government of bias in the investigation of the ICE shooting in Minneapolis, claiming the Trump administration couldn’t be trusted to conduct a fair probe without including state authorities. Walz demanded Minnesota be involved in the process, even as he and other local leaders had already issued their own judgments about the incident before any official findings were released.
Walz then goes even further, publicly trashing members of the Trump administration — which is, by any reasonable definition, passing judgment. He condemns the people conducting the investigation while simultaneously demanding a role in it, after already declaring the outcome illegitimate. That contradiction says everything.
What Walz doesn’t acknowledge is the basic structure of federal law enforcement: when a federal agency investigates the actions of its own personnel, there is no legal requirement to give a state government supervisory or investigative authority. The federal government is not obliged to hand over control or involve state officials in a federal investigation.
Instead of accepting that reality, Walz and other Democrats have used inflammatory rhetoric to escalate tensions — feeding broader narratives that blame federal agents for outcomes that stem from lawful enforcement operations. Their words have helped fuel protests and unrest directed against ICE, all while demanding a role in an investigation where they are stakeholders with political motives to shape the narrative.
WATCH:
Here is the real Tim Walz getting drilled by Congress for his outrageous rhetoric against ICE long before the current ICE raids in his state.
WATCH:
This one is the worst of all. Here is the governor of Minnesota giving a commencement speech where he refers to ICE as Donald Trump’s Gestapo that pulls up in unmarked vans, wearing masks (he forgot to mention that they have the word POLICE all over their uniforms), who grab people off the streets to ship them off to foreign torture chambers. He uses the term disappeared like other radical progressive Democrats. He never mentions that the ICE targets have all been served with a final notice of deportation, and they failed to show up.
WATCH:
Here is Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson accusing Trump of being the one who is escalating violence on the streets and declaring war on the city of Chicago.
WATCH:
Only in the minds of progressive libnuts can law enforcement officers lawfully executing their duties be guilty of declaring war on a city that they are working to make safer.
All of their claims against ICE are false.
ICE agents are performing lawful arrests under federal authority.
The Consequence of Incitement
When politicians tell their constituents that law enforcement is criminal, some people will act on it. Protests turn into interference. Interference turns into violence. And when agents are attacked, Democrats rush to defend the attackers while condemning law enforcement.
You can see just how far the Democratic Party has drifted from what it once claimed to stand for. Under Bill Clinton, enforcing immigration law was framed as a duty to the American people. Today, that same party does not merely ignore those laws. It actively fights the federal agents tasked with enforcing them. What was once about protecting the country has become about undermining the law itself, and the contrast could not be more stark.
This is how a political party radicalizes itself into open hostility toward the rule of law.
The video evidence speaks for itself. The rhetoric speaks for itself. The streets speak for themselves.
This is not about immigration anymore. It is about whether the United States will remain a country governed by laws or surrender to mobs encouraged by those in power.
Bill Clinton once understood that distinction.
Today’s Democratic Party does not.
And the cost of that transformation is being paid in chaos, intimidation, and bloodshed.
