Gavin Newsom Screwed Up the Paperwork and Now Has to Sue His Secretary of State to Call Himself a Democrat on Recall Ballot

I live in Pennsylvania, and I think I heard California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom scream a frustrated F-Bomb.

I’ve been laughing out loud since I first heard about it.

The Golden State governor made a highly embarrassing mistake on his paperwork for the upcoming recall election and to fix it he has to sue the elections chief, who he himself installed. This is priceless.

The governor and his staff overlooked the paperwork last year that would have allowed him to choose his party preference on a recall ballot, according to a legal filing reported on Monday by Courthouse News. That apparent failure means that Newsom will show up on the recall ballot with no party designation, while dozens of challengers will have their party listed because they knew how to read and follow the rules. That’s hilarious.

He’s facing the recall because he acted like a tyrant with the never-ending COVID-19 lockdown and other mitigation rules that he himself violated when he got caught dining out at a dinner party at the expensive French Laundry restaurant with friends who were all sitting around a table where no one was wearing a mask and they were not social distancing. It would be one thing if he had just gone out to the restaurant and wore a mask around other people, but the fact that no one in his dinner party was social distancing and no one was wearing a mask was a slap in the face to the people of California that those in charge of the lockdowns and other draconian measures, when they thought no one was looking, they didn’t take the COVID crisis seriously.

Newsom gave a phony apology later for the dinner party but the recall effort got enough signatures, so it wasn’t really the fact that he was a phony as much as the people were tired of having their rights trampled upon when they were healthy all along.

On Monday, Newsom filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Shirley Weber in Sacramento Superior Court seeking to put “Democratic Party” on the ballot, based on the Courthouse News document. Newsom nominated Weber to her SOS seat in December, replacing Alex Padilla, whom Newsom placed in the US Senate as was the law.

Weber, who is a former Democratic assembly member, took office in January and now is in charge of certifying the recall election.

Weber was nominated by Newsom back in December after naming her predecessor to the US Senate.

The legal challenge comes as the recall election draws closer, with the election possibly taking place in September. Just last week, Weber confirmed that advocates had more than enough signatures to qualify the recall election, and several administrative steps remain before the date is confirmed.

“The Secretary of State’s office has a ministerial duty to accept timely filed documents,” Weber’s office in a statement on Tuesday concerning Newsom’s lawsuit. “Acceptance of filings beyond a deadline requires judicial resolution.”

Not only did Newsom fail to meet the deadline to declare his political party on the ballot, but the irony is that Newsom signed the bill that implemented that deadline into law in 2019. It was unanimously supported by Democrats in the one-party state.

In the lawsuit, Newsom is arguing it was unfair (It’s Not FAIR!) that he was asked to declare his party designation at the time because it was not clear if the recall campaign was going to get the right amount of signatures to qualify for the ballot.

“To apply that deadline here would also lead to absurd results,” the suit declares. “The voters would be deprived of the very information the Legislature has deemed important for them to receive, all because the Governor’s counsel inadvertently failed to file a form about the Governor’s ballot designation at least sixteen months before the recall election has been called and long before it became clear that the recall would even qualify for the ballot.”

Isn’t it ironic that the governor screwed up and now he wants to get special treatment for violating a rule he signed into law? What a dope.

Republicans in the California Assembly took to social media to taunt the governor over the mistake.
