Well, here we go again—another day, another government agency wrapped in a “saving the world” marketing campaign while pulling off some, shall we say, questionable activities behind the scenes. USAID—the U.S. Agency for International Development—the folks who supposedly spend your tax dollars helping struggling nations. But according to Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), it’s much bigger than that.
“USAID supports freedom fighters everywhere in this world,” Murphy proudly declared at a rally outside USAID headquarters. Ah yes, “freedom fighters.” That broad, feel-good phrase can mean anything from literal heroes to well-dressed lobbyists with suspiciously fat bank accounts to terrorists and BLM rioters. Didn’t they call that murderous thug Che Guevara a freedom fighter?
But let’s talk reality—because things get murky real fast. It turns out USAID has been funding organizations that do more than just “help”—they’ve been running smear campaigns and working to silence certain American voices that dare to step out of line. In other words, USAID was using your tax dollars to fund censorship programs that censored your speech. They made you pay so that the government could silence you. So much for democracy and free speech, huh?
Smearing Americans: A USAID Specialty
USAID has been sending cash to the Zinc Network, an anti-disinformation group. Sounds nice, right? Except they’ve been busy labeling people like reporter Max Blumenthal, politician Vivek Ramaswamy, and Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), as disinformation threats. That’s right—your tax dollars are hard at work, making sure certain people don’t get to speak too loudly with their unacceptable views.
USAID also threw money at a little pesticide industry PR stunt called v-Fluence, which went digging for dirt on American food journalists Michael Pollan and Mark Bittman. Because apparently, exposing the shady side of Big Agriculture makes you an enemy of the state now.
And the grand finale? A network of groups in Ukraine that have been on a mission to paint American voices supporting peace negotiations with Russia as—drumroll—Kremlin agents. You know, puppets of Putin. Classic radical woke Marxist move.

Now, you might be thinking, “Isn’t the U.S. government banned from pushing propaganda against its own citizens?” Good question! And the answer is yes—technically. But USAID found a workaround. Instead of getting caught red-handed, they send funds to third-party groups overseas, who then take care of the “problem” for them. Clever, right? It’s like Dr. Anthony Fauci not wanting culpability for funding gain of function research so he funneled the grant money to the Wuhan Lab in China through a third-party organization called EchoHealth Alliance. It’s a classic move made by people who know they are doing wrong and want to get away with it.
One of USAID’s go-to partners for this kind of work is Internews, which in turn funds a lovely little lineup of Ukrainian media outlets: New Voice of Ukraine, VoxUkraine, Detector Media, and the Institute of Mass Information. These guys have been busy producing reports and videos calling economist Jeffrey Sachs, commentator Tucker Carlson, independent journalist Glenn Greenwald, and Professor John Mearsheimer part of a sinister “network of Russian propaganda.” Nothing screams objectivity like labeling everyone you disagree with as a Kremlin puppet.
The Censorship Machine
But it doesn’t stop in Ukraine. Take VoxUkraine—a USAID-backed outlet that’s also an official fact-checking partner for Meta (a.k.a. Facebook). That means they don’t just write articles; they help Big Tech decide what you get to see and what gets tossed into the memory hole as “disinformation.” Fun stuff violating the First Amendment! The Left is like one giant group project—the loudest voices do the least work, facts get ignored, and in the end, everyone suffers because of their bad ideas.
Meanwhile, Detector Media pumps out English-language reports that get picked up by Western media outlets—giving their USAID-funded narratives a polished, “independent” look. Spoiler alert: they’re not so independent after all.
It is absolutely amazing that these USAID workers got away with this nonsense for so long. And an even more astonishing thing is that we now have hysterical Democrats screaming and crying its demise. It’s as if they are announcing very publicly and loudly that they support censorship, government-sponsored propaganda, and slamming America’s reputation. And we’re all paying for it!
Follow the Money
So, how deep does USAID’s involvement go? Let’s check the receipts:
- USAID hands out “special grants” to Detector Media to “undermine Kremlin information operations” and “bolster international support for solidarity with Ukraine.” Sounds like a noble cause—until you realize that “undermining Kremlin operations” conveniently includes silencing American citizens.
- In 2021, Detector Media got 35.1% of its nearly $1 million budget from USAID contractor Internews.
- By 2023, USAID cut out the middleman and just handed Detector Media a cool $2.5 million directly.
So, in summary: USAID takes your money, funnels it through various international middlemen (third-party laundering), and uses it to target and discredit Americans who dare to question the Left’s government narrative. And all while selling it under the banner of “freedom.”
That’s a nice gig if you can get it.
