In his bid to unseat Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul (not elected), Republican Representative Lee Zeldin has now taken the lead in the campaign for governor of New York, according to a Trafalgar Group report released late Monday night.
According to the poll of the 1,198 likely general election voters, 48.4% would support Zeldin and 47.6% would support Hochul. Zeldin leads the Democratic incumbent by less than a point and inside the margin of error with 4% of voters still undecided. In this day and age, after what the Democrats have done to this country, especially with what Hochul did to New York, how could anyone remain undecided?
From October 27 to October 31, the Trafalgar Group poll sampled 1,198 probable general election voters. It had a margin of error of 2.9 percent and a 95 percent confidence level. 53.6 percent of respondents to the poll identified as Democrats, 27.5 percent as Republicans, and 18.9 percent as not affiliated with any party or group.
The poll was released the day after a New York Times article detailing how Zeldin’s surge in the poll had caused the national Democrats to be concerned about the contest and, consequently, the impact a major upset would have on the down-ballot races, similar to what occurred in Virginia last year when then-candidate Glenn Youngkin won his gubernatorial race, was published.
According to The Times, the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) decided to spend money on the election after initially not intending to:
The Democratic Governors Association had not initially planned to spend on the race, but as polls have tightened and the Republican Governors Association began dumping $2 million into a pro-Zeldin super PAC, the Democrats decided to act. A spokesman for the D.G.A., David Turner, did not say how much it planned to spend [Emphasis added].
