Oh great. Just what we needed. Another potential pandemic to keep us on the edge of our seats. Will this one be hyped up like COVID-19? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is back in action, reminding us there’s always something else to worry about. This time, it’s the H5N1 bird flu. Yep, bird flu. Because clearly, the world hasn’t had enough experience with viruses lately.
Apparently, the CDC recently confirmed the first severe U.S. human case of H5N1 bird flu in a 65-year-old man from Louisiana. And how did he manage to catch this elusive virus? By hanging out with sick backyard birds. Not exactly the tropical vacation most of us would choose. But look on the bright side. At least they’re not trying to sell us on another bat theory. #EyeRoll
This is where things become fascinating (or worrisome, depending on your point of view). According to the Associated Press, a genetic study of the virus revealed alterations in the hemagglutinin (HA) gene, which specialists believe may improve the virus’s potential to infect humans. Great! Mutations! Exactly what we were hoping for. As if that wasn’t enough, the mutations did not appear in the birds on the man’s land. This shows that the virus may have mutated following infection. Translation: This avian flu decided to evolve and level up in the middle of the game. Or, maybe another Chinese lab did the work for us.
And it’s not just a one-off thing. Earlier this year, a teenager in British Columbia, Canada, also caught this virus, complete with mutations that facilitate human infection. So, not only is this flu spreading, but it’s apparently learning new tricks along the way.
But don’t worry, the CDC says, the current risk to the general public remains low. Sure, that’s comforting… until it isn’t. How many times have we heard that one before? Low risk, until suddenly everyone’s hunting for toilet paper again. I swear, if I hear one of the CDC ghouls talk about “two weeks to stop the spread,” I’m going to go postal.
In case you didn’t get the sarcasm, I don’t believe this bird flu thing is a naturally occurring virus any more than I thought COVID-19 was. I think this is yet another biological weapon to screw with the Trump administration, which cannot get here soon enough.
