In the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris took home 19 states. And here’s an interesting little tidbit: 18 of those states don’t require voters to show a photo ID. I know! I couldn’t believe it either. According to a review by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), as of April 2024, those states let you vote without the whole “prove you are who you say you are” thing.

Let’s break it down. Thirty-six states in the U.S. do ask for some kind of ID when you show up to vote. But out of those 36, only 24 are big on the whole “show us your photo ID” thing; the other 12 are fine with any ID as long as it’s something. But of the states Harris won, 12 of them, including heavy-hitters like California, Oregon, and New York, don’t ask for ID at all. Just stroll in, say you’re here to vote, and that’s pretty much that.
Five of the other states Harris won—Colorado, Washington, Delaware, Connecticut, and Virginia—technically ask for ID, but they’re not super picky about it being a photo ID. Think of it like a club where the bouncer’s a little more relaxed about who’s on the list. And in places like Colorado and Washington, where most of the voting happens by mail, the ID laws are just for in-person voters, so it doesn’t come up much anyway.
VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELNow, in states like Delaware, Connecticut, and Virginia, if you show up without an ID, no big deal. You can sign an affidavit swearing that you’re really you, and off you go to cast your regular ballot. It’s sort of like promising you’ll totally bring your ID next time (wink wink).
Then we have New Hampshire, where Harris also won. They let you vote without an ID, too — but they’re a bit more suspicious. You’ve got to sign a “challenged voter affidavit” (fancy words for “Are you sure you’re not lying?”) before they hand over a ballot. After the election, they’ll even send you a letter that you have to sign and return. If you don’t, guess what? Voter fraud investigation time! Seems New Hampshire isn’t here to play.
Rhode Island is the only state Harris won that doesn’t mess around with the no-ID crowd. If you don’t have an ID there, you’re looking at a provisional ballot only. Then they’ll compare your signature to one they have on file. So, don’t get fancy with the handwriting.
On the flip side, a few states Harris lost, like Nevada and Pennsylvania, also don’t require an ID. But it’s worth noting Nevada voters recently passed Question 7, which will make photo IDs a must in future elections. Pennsylvania also tried to get on the strict ID bandwagon back in 2012, but the state’s supreme court struck it down.
Meanwhile, Trump won in states like Iowa, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Utah, where they just politely “ask” for ID but don’t insist on it. Classic.
So there you have it: a snapshot of where ID is king, where it’s a suggestion, and where it’s practically an afterthought. The 2024 election highlighted how voting rules are all over the map, depending on where you live. Democrats are the ones who came up with all the gourmet ways to vote, all of which are ripe for fraud. But until they figure out how to fake a state driver’s license, voter ID laws are the way every real vote counts. That’s what the Democrats tell us they want, but again, (wink wink).
Voter ID doesn’t prevent people from voting; it prevents people from cheating.
