In a stunning move, Republicans took complete control of Ohio’s Supreme Court. They no outnumber Democrats 6 to 1. Previously, it was a mixed bag with Republicans outnumbering Democrats 4 to 3. I guess the constitution will be upheld in the great state of Ohio where I grew up.Well, maybe I didn’t grow up, but I was born and raised there. Incumbent Democratic Justice Michael Donnelly lost to Republican Judge Megan Shanahan. In a race between two incumbents, Republican Justice Joseph Deters defeated Democratic Justice Melody Stewart.
Republican candidate Judge Daniel defeated Democratic candidate Judge Lisa Forbes. That race was to fill the vacancy left by Deters and was held just to finish his term which will end in December of 2026. He can then run for a full six month term.
The new court will be deciding a high profile case on abortion. The voters passed a referendum to make abortion a constitutional right, but the legislature voted on an abortion plan, which a judge declared was not appropriate. The new court will be deciding that case. I am anti-abortion, but I am not comfortable with overruling the will of the people.
An Ohio judge blocked the state’s abortion ban in October, portions of which Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has continued to defend after voters approved an amendment last year making abortion a constitutional right, according to Reuters. The issue could now end up before the state’s Supreme Court.
Candidates and outside groups spent more than $900,000 on television ads during the campaign cycle, according to an estimate from the Brennan Center For Justice.

In May, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and Planned Parenthood Votes announced a $5 billion effort to target races in the same states: Arizona, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.
