Scientists Want To Eliminate 4 Billion People From the Planet by 2200

A group of international scientists has put forward a disturbing vision for humanity’s future. According to their newly published study, the global population should eventually fall by about 4 billion people to create what they call a “sustainable” world.

Yes, you read that correctly. These researchers believe the planet would be better off with roughly half as many human beings living on it.

The study was written by approximately a dozen researchers and led by Columbia University’s Mark Keegan. It argues that the global population should gradually decline to around 4 billion people by 2200.

“We show that slowing and gradually reversing population growth to ~4 billion or less by 2200, while moderating per capita impacts, is the path toward sustainability,” the authors wrote.

That phrase, “per capita impacts,” deserves some attention. It refers to reducing how much energy people use, along with the amount of food, resources, and consumer goods available to them.

In other words, their preferred future would contain fewer people. Those who remain would also be expected to consume less.

Researchers Blame Humanity for Environmental Problems

The researchers place human population growth at the center of nearly every major environmental problem.

Their study links the number of people on Earth to declining wildlife populations. It also points to carbon dioxide emissions and increasing energy demand. Freshwater consumption is included in the argument, as are mineral extraction, plastic production, pesticide use, and humanity’s overall ecological footprint.

“Global environmental problems are caused by people, nothing else,” the authors asserted.

“The more of us there are, the greater our overall economic demands and the greater the associated environmental problems.”

That statement reveals the worldview driving the entire proposal. Human beings are being discussed primarily as environmental burdens.

The authors eventually describe continued population growth as fundamentally “unsustainable.”

Using projections from the United Nations, they estimate that the world’s population could peak somewhere between 9 billion and more than 11 billion people before the end of this century. In their view, those numbers would present an unacceptable threat to the planet’s long-term future.

But who decides what population level is acceptable? More importantly, who gets to determine which policies will be used to reach that number?

Those are not minor questions.

Calls for More Population-Control Policies

The study recommends expanding access to what the authors call “reproductive health services,” which is language that commonly encompasses contraception and abortion.

Greater educational opportunities for girls are also part of the proposal, particularly in developing countries. The authors believe this would help lower birth rates in nations where families still tend to have more children.

Their plan extends well beyond reproduction.

Governments would be encouraged to reduce consumption through tougher land-use regulations. The researchers favor stronger pollution controls and new energy-efficiency targets. Limits could also be placed on extracting resources from forests, fisheries, and other parts of the natural world.

Even those actions may not satisfy the researchers forever. They suggest that more aggressive measures could eventually become necessary through government action at the local, national, or international level.

Whenever experts begin talking about controlling both population and consumption, ordinary people have every reason to pay close attention. History tells us that sweeping plans designed to manage humanity rarely remain voluntary once the planners decide the public is not cooperating quickly enough.

Critics Say Population Collapse Is the Real Threat

Here is where the entire argument begins running into trouble.

Many demographers believe overpopulation is no longer the greatest danger facing humanity. They are warning about the exact opposite problem.

Fertility rates have fallen dramatically across much of the world. Even this study acknowledges that the worldwide fertility rate was only 2.2 children per woman in 2024. That number sits barely above the replacement level required to maintain a stable population.

Much of the developed world has already fallen below replacement fertility. Several countries are watching their populations age while the number of young workers steadily declines.

A major study published in The Lancet projected that global population decline could begin within the next several decades.

Economist Dean Spears of the University of Texas Population Research Center has warned about what could happen if fertility remains below replacement level for too long. Under those conditions, he believes the global population could eventually fall to “very small” numbers.

Spears and his co-authors say an extended population decline could produce serious economic consequences. Workforces would shrink as societies aged. Labor shortages could become increasingly difficult to manage. Older infrastructure might deteriorate because fewer workers would be available to maintain it.

Innovation could also suffer. Healthcare systems would face growing pressure as a smaller working population struggled to care for a much larger elderly population. Researchers have even warned about worsening mental health as communities become older, smaller, and more isolated.

Even the World Economic Forum has admitted that a large-scale population collapse could have “severe” consequences.

That admission matters because the world is already moving toward lower fertility without the kind of government intervention proposed in this new study.

Debate Over Earth’s Carrying Capacity

The belief that Earth cannot support its current population is far from settled science.

Estimates of the planet’s carrying capacity vary so dramatically that it is difficult to treat any single number as authoritative.

Some researchers estimate that Earth can sustainably support about 8 billion people, which is close to the current global population. Other studies place the number near 16 billion.

Several estimates go much higher, suggesting that the planet could support as many as 64 billion people. One theoretical model even concluded that Earth might sustain more than 1 trillion people if technology advanced far enough.

That is quite a range.

When estimates stretch from 8 billion to more than 1 trillion, perhaps the real question is not how many people Earth can hold. The answer may depend more on what human beings are capable of inventing.

Technology changes the calculation. Agricultural advances have repeatedly increased food production. Improvements in transportation, sanitation, water systems, and energy have allowed civilizations to support populations that earlier generations would have considered impossible.

Human creativity keeps overturning the predictions of those who view every new life as another mouth consuming a permanently fixed supply of resources.

Past Predictions Failed to Materialize

Psychologist Jordan Peterson has frequently reminded audiences that earlier predictions of catastrophic overpopulation failed spectacularly.

Decades ago, the globalist and pro-depopulation Club of Rome issued warnings about what would supposedly happen if the world’s population continued growing. Its forecasts included mass starvation and riots. Some predictions suggested that entire societies would collapse by the turn of the century because there were supposedly “too many people on the planet.”

“That just didn’t happen at all,” Peterson said.

“It wasn’t just wrong, it was anti-true.

“It was absolutely wrong.”

Peterson’s point is difficult to dismiss. The predicted worldwide catastrophe never arrived.

Instead, living standards improved across much of the globe. Hundreds of millions of people escaped extreme poverty. Food production increased while technology opened economic opportunities that earlier generations could scarcely have imagined.

Author Eric Metaxas has connected modern overpopulation fears to the theories of Thomas Malthus. Malthus predicted that human population growth would eventually outrun food production, leading to widespread famine and misery.

That prediction did not account for human ingenuity.

Environmental scientist Erle C. Ellis has challenged the idea of a permanent limit on the number of people Earth can sustain. He argues that technological progress continually expands humanity’s ability to produce food and use resources more efficiently.

History supports that argument. Societies have repeatedly sustained populations far beyond the limits predicted by traditional Malthusian models.

That is why Ellis concluded that there is “no such thing as a human carrying capacity” in any fixed sense.

The key phrase is “in any fixed sense.” Humanity does not remain frozen in one technological era. People adapt when circumstances change. New ideas emerge, and old limitations disappear.

That is the hopeful truth the population-control movement consistently overlooks.

Human beings are more than units of consumption on an environmental spreadsheet. Every person also represents potential creativity. A child born today could become the scientist who develops a cleaner energy source or the engineer who makes agriculture dramatically more productive.

This new study still joins a growing collection of proposals calling for fewer births and tighter government control over consumption. Its authors favor additional intervention even as many countries confront shrinking populations, aging workforces, and collapsing fertility rates.

We should take those proposals seriously, although perhaps not for the reason their authors intended.

They reveal a worldview that treats people themselves as the problem. Yet history continues to demonstrate that free human beings, strong families, and technological innovation are capable of overcoming challenges that once appeared impossible.

The future does not have to belong to population planners deciding how many people the world should contain. It can belong to societies that value human life and trust people to build something better.

That choice is still ours.
