Whistleblowers within the Department of Homeland Security have claimed that the bulk of former President Donald Trump‘s security detail were “not even Secret Service,” according to a Republican lawmaker.
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri made these allegations in a public letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on Friday, detailing a number of security failings at Trump’s fatal Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.

“Whistleblowers who have direct knowledge of the event have approached my office. According to the allegations, the July 13 rally was considered to be a ‘loose’ security event,” Hawley stated in his letter. “For example, detection canines were not used to monitor entry and detect threats in the usual manner. Individuals without proper designations were able to gain access to backstage areas.”

One of the most concerning claims is that the majority of those protecting the former president were not United States Secret Service (USSS) agents.
“Whistleblower allegations suggest the majority of DHS officials were not in fact USSS agents but instead drawn from the department’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI),” according to Hawley. “This is especially concerning given that HSI agents were unfamiliar with standard protocols typically used at these types of events, according to the allegations.”

The Missouri senator chastised the DHS for neglecting to furnish Congress with details on the incident and “abruptly ending the only call with USSSS before most senators could even ask a question.”
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., previously described the Secret Service briefing given to lawmakers on Wednesday concerning the latest assassination attempt against former President Trump, claiming there was “virtually no information” offered.
“The director of the Secret Service did admit there were mistakes and gaffes,” Johnson stated, referring to Kimberly Cheatle. However, Johnson claims that the briefing, given by a separate official, was “largely irrelevant.” Only four senators were permitted to ask questions, and there were no follow-ups, he stated.
Hawley’s letter requests answers to a number of concerns related to the whistleblowers’ assertions, such as the USSS-to-HSI agent ratio and pre-rally security investigations.
