I believe the Texas Democrats just made the biggest political screwup of their careers, and it could cost them everything. While the country is sobering up to political realities, the Democrats are still playing games as if no consequences are waiting for them.
Over 50 of them packed up and fled the state to block a quorum in the legislature. The goal was to prevent a vote on a new state redistricting map that would give Republicans five additional seats in the midterm elections. Rather than stay and do their jobs, they boarded a private jet and hid out in Illinois, which just happens to be the most gerrymandered state in the nation. Back in Texas, lawmakers were left to deal with real issues, including urgent flood relief for victims of a recent tragedy.
That choice is now coming with consequences. Texas officials are looking into who paid for the private flight, and there are suspicions of potential bribery. State law is very clear. It prohibits politicians from receiving money or favors in exchange for votes. Beto O’Rourke’s name keeps coming up, as reports now say that O’Rourke’s political action committee, along with funding tied to George Soros, was helping bankroll this escape. That funding has been cut off by a Texas judge. The judge called the fundraising practices unlawful and suggested they amounted to a bribery scheme. Governor Greg Abbott warned them that they would be charged if they took money from anyone to pay for the trip.
The penalties are piling up. Each absent lawmaker is being fined $500 a day, which comes out to more than $150,000 per year. Republicans have also frozen their paychecks and operating budgets. If Democrats want their salaries, they have to pick them up in person at the Capitol. where arrest warrants await.
Governor Abbott is not holding back. He is pursuing lawsuits to remove the lawmakers from office, starting with their leader. He is also considering adding three more Republican seats to the redistricting plan, raising the GOP gain to eight. Abbott has made it clear that these lawmakers will be arrested and charged with felonies upon their return.
This political standoff is draining Democrats of money and momentum. Democrats are used to getting away with these things, as there are usually no consequences when you have a “D” next to your name. Not this time. With funding cut off, fines building every day, and no paychecks coming in, time is running out. Analysts are already saying they cannot stay away for months or years.
VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELI think extradition orders should be filed, and they should be hunted down, captured, arrested, and sent back to Texas to face the music. If they don’t make an example out of this batch of goofy politicians, then Democrats across the country in red states will try the same thing when their legislators begin redistricting.
This whole episode is part of a bigger picture. The Democratic Party is in decline. They are losing members as voters move from blue states to red ones. In California alone, millions of ineligible voters have been removed from the rolls, weakening the party’s base. Financially, the situation is just as bleak. The DNC is in debt, while Republicans have raised over a billion dollars for the midterms.
Voters are siding with Republicans on nearly every major issue: the economy, border security, foreign policy, and ending wokeness. Democrats can’t seem to land on a winning message, and their political stunts come off as nothing more than desperate grabs for attention in a news cycle that’s quickly leaving them behind.
What is happening in Texas is a smaller version of what is happening across the country. The party is bleeding members, losing money, and watching its influence shrink. As Abbott and Texas Republicans turn up the pressure, the real question is not whether these lawmakers will return. It is how much this stunt is going to cost them when they do. And it’s not only money they will lose.
