Let’s not start measuring the curtains in the speaker’s office just yet. This election will be close. Even if Republicans pull it off, they may enter the next session with a majority of only five to eight seats. The era of comfortable double-digit margins appears to be over for now.

Democrats probably began this cycle feeling confident. History usually favors the party out of power in midterm elections. Then Democrats began creating problems for themselves. Questions have also emerged about some House and Senate races. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Republicans certainly have their own troublemakers. Still, the Democratic establishment probably never expected a Stalinist insurgency to develop inside the party. Its public image has continued to deteriorate while its leaders struggle to offer voters a coherent agenda. Everything still revolves around Trump. Meanwhile, Democrats have shown little interest in offering serious solutions to the affordability crisis.

Their real priority is investigating Trump. They insist they are not necessarily talking about impeaching him, as if voters will see a meaningful difference.

They won’t.

If Democrats retake the House, they will launch a political treasure hunt. Committees will search for anything they can portray as scandalous, no matter how insignificant it may be. Then friendly media outlets will act as though corruption has suddenly appeared in Washington for the first time.

Democrats mention grocery prices because they know voters are struggling. Yet their obsession with Trump always seems to take over. You already know where this is going.

The most remarkable part is the confidence Democratic leaders continue to display after voters soundly rejected their party in 2024. Why would those voters suddenly support Democrats two years later? What has the party done to earn them back?

Nothing.

That helps explain why Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency despised by the Left, has a higher favorability rating than the Democratic Party. Democrats also remain deeply unpopular with independent voters. Their problems with men have not gone away either.

The party’s weakness created an opening for the Democratic Socialists of America. The DSA entered the Democratic coalition and began spreading through it. Unless establishment Democrats confront this movement, it could eventually take control of the entire party.

DSA-backed candidates are winning races across the country. Most of those victories have occurred outside the districts that will determine control of Congress. That does not make the movement harmless. Once these candidates gain power, they could make the Squad look tame by comparison.

Fortunately, that is the Democrats’ problem.

Democratic politicians appear regularly on friendly television networks and complain about nearly every major issue. What they rarely provide is a believable plan for addressing those concerns. Their attempt to hide their fixation on impeaching Trump has not worked. They also seem convinced that the DSA movement will eventually fade away on its own.

That is political malpractice.

DSA politics remains unpopular among working-class Americans. Black voters are especially skeptical, and Democrats cannot afford to lose their support in either 2026 or 2028.

That brings us to Michigan.

Abdul El-Sayed, or AES, is a far-left candidate with a history of sympathizing with terrorists. To win, he would need to expand his support among black voters. He would also have to persuade Jewish voters and people living in rural communities to back him.

That is probably never going to happen.

Rep. Haley Stevens is running against AES in the Democratic primary. A meaningful share of her supporters could vote Republican if AES becomes the nominee. If even five percent of those voters move toward Republican Mike Rogers, Rogers wins the race.

A Rogers victory would effectively secure the Republican Senate majority, regardless of what happens in Alaska.

Then there is the Democrats’ leadership crisis. Who can lead this party without alienating its own voters?

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York already looks like a lame duck. I would not be surprised if he is no longer leading House Democrats next year. If he survives, he could emerge badly weakened because many members of his caucus do not appear eager to support him.

Sen. Chuck Schumer was pushed aside months ago. Nancy Pelosi is gone. That leaves Democrats with an uncomfortable question.

Who comes next?

Could it be the DSA?

One can only hope.

An even greater political reckoning is approaching. The 2030 congressional reapportionment could be brutal for Democrats. Its effect on the Electoral College may be even more significant.

We could soon enter a political era in which a Republican presidential candidate can win without depending on the traditional blue wall. That wall was already beginning to crumble, but the larger point matters.

Republicans were forced to rebuild their coalition and discover new paths to victory. Democrats have far less room to maneuver because their coalition lacks geographic diversity. A party dominated by wealthy college-educated white voters cannot depend on cities and coastal strongholds to reach 270 electoral votes.

The Trump era will eventually come to an end, sadly. When that day arrives, Democrats may find themselves staring across a political nuclear wasteland of their own creation.

For now, they should keep distracting themselves with fantasies about another Trump impeachment. Let them waste this election cycle chasing the same obsession that already drove voters away.

Go ahead, you absolute clowns.

Also, it’s not going to happen.

Democrats probably entered this cycle feeling confident. History usually punishes the party controlling Washington during the midterms. Then Democrats began creating problems for themselves. Controversies have surfaced in House and Senate races. Republicans certainly have a few candidates capable of causing headaches, but Democratic leaders likely never expected an internal socialist rebellion to make their damaged brand even worse.

That rebellion has exposed a much larger problem. Democrats still do not have an agenda that speaks to ordinary Americans. Nearly every issue eventually becomes another fight about President Trump. When voters demand relief from high prices, Democrats offer more investigations.

They insist that they are focused on investigating Trump rather than impeaching him, as though voters will see a meaningful difference. If Democrats retake the House, they will search for anything they can turn into a scandal. The importance of the evidence will not matter. Their allies will present every discovery as the greatest corruption ever uncovered in Washington.

Democrats talk about groceries because they know affordability matters. Their behavior suggests that removing Trump remains the real priority. Voters can see through it.

The most remarkable part is the party’s attitude toward the Americans who rejected it in 2024. Why should those voters return two years later? What has the party done to earn back their support?

The answer is painfully obvious. Nothing.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency despised by the Left, now has a higher favorability rating than the Democratic Party. Democrats continue to struggle with independent voters. Their problems among men remain severe. That political weakness created an opening for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), and the organization is taking full advantage of it.

DSA-backed candidates are winning races across the country. Most of those victories are not happening in districts that will determine control of Congress, but that should not make Democratic leaders feel safe. Once elected, these candidates could make the Squad look moderate. Republicans do not need to solve that problem for them.

Democrats seem convinced that the socialist surge will eventually fade. That belief may become one of their most expensive political mistakes.

DSA politics remains unpopular with many working-class Americans. Black voters may prove especially difficult to persuade. Any Democrat hoping to win nationally in 2026 or 2028 will need substantial support from those communities.

Michigan offers a warning. Abdul El-Sayed (AES), a far-left candidate accused by critics of sympathizing with terrorists, must persuade black voters to support him. He also needs Jewish voters. Winning rural communities presents another serious obstacle. His chances of assembling that coalition appear slim.

Rep. Haley Stevens’ supporters could decide what happens next. If even five percent of them vote for Republican Mike Rogers, Rogers could win the race. A Rogers victory would likely secure the Republican Senate majority regardless of the outcome in Alaska.

Then we come to the leadership crisis.

Which Democratic leader can unite the party without alienating its voters? Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) already looks like a potential lame duck. He may not lead House Democrats next year. If he survives, he could emerge weakened because members of his own caucus appear increasingly reluctant to stand behind him.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was pushed aside months ago. Nancy Pelosi is gone. The party’s old guard is disappearing while the socialist wing continues gaining ground.

So who takes control next?

The DSA?
