The alleged assailant of Paul Pelosi told a 911 operator he was a “friend” of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband minutes before attacking the 82-year-old with a hammer this past October, according to frightening audio released Friday.
The news reported it as Pelosi said he was a friend. Well, he did, but even a toddler could tell that Mr. Pelosi was under duress. And the way he talked to the dispatcher was clear enough, that is, if you’re really listening, and I don’t think she was.
“Uh, yeah, he says he’s a friend, but as I said, I don’t know him,” Paul Pelosi responded to the operator after the attacker, David DePape, claimed to be a friend.
He says he’s a friend, but as I said, I don’t know him. I would have sent a unit right after that exchange. A man calls 911 and tells the dispatcher that there is a man in his house who says he is a friend, but the caller says he doesn’t know him.
The nearly three-minute conversation became public on Friday when a court ordered the release of evidence, including police body camera footage and audio of DePape’s initial interview with investigators, at the request of news organizations.

As the call begins, Paul Pelosi appears to remain calm, informing DePape, “I guess I called by mistake” referring to the San Francisco Police Department.
He then told Heather Grimes, the 911 operator, that there was a “There is a gentleman here, uh, just waiting for my wife to come back — Nancy Pelosi.” Grimes’ response was “Okay, do you need police, fire, medical or anything?” What he needed was a much smarter dispatcher.
Again, that should have rung a bell to the dingbat dispatcher. Who in the country doesn’t know who Nancy Pelosi is? And who in the entire San Francisco Police Department doesn’t know that the Speaker of the House of Representatives lives in the city? Okay, so Nancy has actually neglected her constituents for a really long time by staying in DC most of the time, but still.
“Uh, he’s just, uh, waiting for her to come back, but she’s not gonna be here for days, so I guess we’ll have to wait,” Paul Pelosi sputtered.
Yet another cry for help from Pelosi to the dispatcher. If Grimes was actually listening, she should have been able to hear the clues Pelosi was giving her. A man is in the house who I don’t know. He said he’s waiting for my wife to come back, but she’s not coming back for days, “so I guess we’ll have to wait.” What more was the dispatcher waiting for? “HELP! There’s a nut job in my home, standing over me with a hammer who is now going to smash my brains in because you’re too stupid to have this job?”
Throughout the 911 call, DePape’s voice can be heard muttering in the background.
During the call, Pelosi asked Grimes, “Is the Capitol Police around? They’re usually here at the house protecting my wife.”
Crimes responds by saying, “No, this is San Francisco Police.” OMG! What a dolt! I think Grimes should be held criminally negligent in this. There was at least a misfeasance here.
“No, I understand,” Pelosi answers when Grimes tells him the number is for San Francisco police. “OK, well…” before asking DePape, “I don’t know. What do you think?”
The 911 operator, who appears bewildered, instructs the two to “call us back if you need anything.”
Can you imagine being Mr. Pelosi at that point? He threw in as many clues as he could come up with while the crazy person was standing over him with a hammer. And his only lifeline was too stupid to pick up on the many clues he gave and was about to break the connection. That had to be terrifying for the old man.
“No, no, no,” says Pelosi. “This gentleman just came into the house and wants to wait here until my wife comes home and, anyway, he’s telling me to put the phone down.”
He then said that he did not recognize the intruder and that “he’s telling me not to do anything.”
“Anyway, this gentleman says he thinks everything ought to — he’s telling me to put down the phone and, uh, just do what he says,” he continued.
Moments afterwards, the then Speaker’s husband informs the operator that the intruder told him to hang up.
“He’s telling me I’m being very leading, so I gotta stop talking to you, OK?” he stammered.
When Grimes offered to stay on the phone “just to make sure everything’s OK,” Pelosi responded: “No, he’s telling me to get the hell off the phone. OK?”
“OK,” Grimes said.
Pelosi thanked her and then hung up the phone.
Unbelievable. I hope Grimes is reprimanded if not outright fired over this. What a colossal failure.
In the police body cam video, you can see that Paul Pelosi does not know DePape.
