President Donald Trump is back at it, making moves on the southern border with all the decisiveness of a man who means business. He wasn’t messing around when he said he was going to close the southern border if elected. And now, the president is keeping his word, something he is known to do.
On Wednesday, Trump ordered a fresh deployment of 1,500 troops to the US-Mexico border, doubling down on his promise to tackle illegal crossings and smuggling like it’s a scene out of Law & Order: Border Patrol Edition.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, never one to mince words, summed it up outside the White House: “This is something President Trump campaigned on. The American people have been waiting for such a time as this for our Department of Defense to actually take homeland security seriously.” Translation? “Finally, someone’s doing the job right.”
Currently, about 2,500 service members are already part of a federal mission known as Joint Task Force North (JTF-N)—yes, the military even gives their border patrol assignments cool names. And if you’re wondering, this isn’t just some new idea Trump dreamed up during breakfast. On the 2024 campaign trail, he was crystal clear about ramping up border security, including sending more boots to the border.
Day one of his return to the Oval Office was, shall we say, a productive evening. Trump wasted no time signing 10 executive actions aimed at border security, including declaring a national emergency. That order gave the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security the green light to pour resources into building new barriers along the southern border. Take that, open-border enthusiasts!
If that wasn’t enough, Trump also signed another executive order titled “Clarifying the Military’s Role in Protecting the Territorial Integrity of the United States.” Fancy title, right? The gist: the armed forces now have to “prioritize” protecting America’s borders. Sounds like common sense, but apparently, this is revolutionary stuff after the last administration.

Back in 2021, he launched Operation Lone Star, a state-led mission to plug the gaps left by—let’s face it—Joe Biden’s lack of enforcement. Abbott’s operation involves the Texas National Guard working hand-in-hand with local law enforcement to secure the border. And he’s not alone. Republican governors from other states have been chipping in by sending their National Guard troops to assist. Teamwork makes the dream work, right? According to the Texas Military Department, there are currently 4,500 National Guard troops lending a hand.
But wait, there’s more! Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses announced that additional resources—including helicopters, intelligence analysts, and airlift capabilities—are being thrown into the mix. Not only will this help monitor and detect border activity, but it will also assist in deportation flights for more than 5,000 illegal aliens in the San Diego and El Paso border sectors. Looks like someone is finally prioritizing action over excuses.
Oh, and the troops aren’t just standing around looking tough. They’re rolling up their sleeves to help construct new temporary and permanent barriers. Salesses summed it up nicely: “This is just the beginning. In short order, the Department will develop and execute additional missions in cooperation with DHS, federal agencies, and state partners to address the full range of threats outlined by the President at our nation’s borders.” Translation? Buckle up—it’s going to be a busy few months.
Meanwhile, White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed on Tuesday that federal immigration authorities have already ramped up deportation efforts. It’s a new day, folks. For those who’ve been begging for a government that actually takes border security seriously, it looks like Christmas came late, but hey—it’s finally here.
