It looks like President Trump read last Tuesday’s election results exactly right. He just pulled off what could be the most brilliant political maneuver in recent memory, and it’s downright stunning. Trump’s strategy boxed Democrats into defending big insurance companies, the very corporations that independent populists despise. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer appears to have fallen right into Trump’s plan, and he’s already hinting that he’s ready to surrender.
Everyone knows this is now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. It’s dragging on because Democrats are refusing to end it unless Obamacare subsidies are made permanent, a move that would cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. The irony is that Obamacare has always been a goldmine for large insurance companies. Every major insurer backed the Affordable Care Act because it made them rich with government money. Since 2010, health insurance stocks have skyrocketed, beating the broader market by more than four times and soaring over 1,000 percent through 2024.
Then, everything shifted. Yesterday, Schumer caved. He made an offer, a huge mistake when you’re not the one in control. He said Democrats would agree to a clean continuing resolution if Republicans would support a one-year extension of Obamacare’s premium tax credits, which expire December 31. Here’s the thing that CNN won’t tell you. Democrats themselves put that expiration date in place back when they held both Congress and the White House under Biden. Republicans had no power to do anything then. This was 100% on the Democrats.
Just a day later, Trump struck back, and he didn’t hold back. He called for a complete overhaul, pointing out what everyone already knows: the system is a mess. On Truth Social, he argued that instead of pouring billions into oversized insurance companies, the government should give that money directly to Americans so they can choose and pay for their own healthcare.

The president’s idea resembles the education savings account model used in some states, in which families receive funds to spend on schooling. His plan would create national health savings accounts, giving Americans direct control over their healthcare dollars. It’s a pro-market approach that could bring real competition and lower prices. Politically, it’s a stroke of genius. Democrats are now forced to defend sending money to insurance companies instead of citizens, the exact opposite of their usual populist talking points. In other words, while the Democrats are going to say that they don’t trust the American people to be smart enough to handle health care savings accounts, Trump is taking away the Democrats’ power by removing the powerful insurance companies from the equation. Democrats receive a lot of lobbying money from insurance companies to pass laws in their favor.
Republicans immediately rallied around it. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) truthed, “Now that’s a good idea!”
Senator Rick Scott said he’s already drafting legislation to make those HSA-style accounts a reality, giving people the power to pick their own plans and drive down costs through competition. The plan also helps low-income Americans the most, since they’d receive the largest contributions. The only obstacle left? Democrats, who can’t stomach the idea because it effectively dismantles Obamacare. Senator Chris Murphy called the proposal “nonsensical,” while left-wing pundits online panicked over how disruptive it could be to their system. Again, their argument is simple: they don’t trust Americans to handle their own money because they despise you, and when you are in charge of your healthcare, you don’t need a sleazeball Democrat to be dependent upon.
This move shifts the focus back to Trump’s core message: putting America First. He’s already demanding investigations into massive meatpacking corporations accused of price fixing and proposing 50-year mortgages to help young Americans buy homes. Now, by redirecting Obamacare funds straight to citizens, Trump is reigniting the populist energy that launched his movement in the first place.
Don’t buy the nonsense from Democrats and their lapdog media buddies claiming Trump is more interested in foreign policy than fixing things at home. If they bothered to pay attention for five minutes, they’d see that Trump’s foreign policy is his domestic policy. He’s not jetting off to kiss the rings of foreign leaders or pose for photo ops. He’s cutting deals that bring jobs, money, and strength back to American workers. His foreign policy is his America First domestic policy.
Once again, Democrats are learning the hard way: there’s still nobody in politics like Donald J. Trump.
