Jonathan Turley, a respected legal commentator and law professor at George Washington University, recently questioned the authenticity of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg‘s case against Donald Trump. His view is based on the notion that Bragg is significantly overstepping his boundaries by entering an unknown legal territory.
The law professor is a liberal Democrat and doesn’t even like Trump, but he cares more for the country and especially our constitutional system than he does about who he is going to vote for.
Turley discussed the anticipated jury verdict on allegations of a suspected ‘hush money’ tactic during a Fox News interview. Turley believes Bragg’s argument against Trump lacks a solid legal basis and is “legally laughable.”
He went on to say that “Bragg, after initially resisting the urge to bring forth these charges, ultimately gave in. The case he’s pursuing was previously dismissed by his predecessor. Therefore, what we see here is a futile attempt to revive a dismissed misdemeanor and escalate it to appear as a serious federal offense.”
Turley added, “The Department of Justice already dismissed the possibility of a federal offense under election law, in regards to this case. However, despite their conclusions, we are now facing the absurdity of this case moving forward.”
The proceedings are chaotic in part due to the complexity of the charges and the case’s reliance on testimony from witnesses like Michael Cohen, who a judge recently referred to as a “serial perjurer.” It is perplexing to see such a character at the center of the case.

He reflected, “Just four short years ago, I was a highly successful and beloved President of the United States, capturing more votes than any sitting President in history.”
“But now,” he said, “I find myself poised to walk into criminal court, ready to face a questionably biased judge, a politically motivated prosecutor, and navigate through a legal system riddled with tumult. At the same time, the state crumbles under the burden of escalating crime and corruption, and it seems Biden’s minions are manipulating the system against his political adversary—that is, me.”
Trump’s fighting spirit is unwavering. He remarked, “While I will indeed be defending my own reputation, my primary concern is fighting for our great country. Such blatant Election Interference has never previously been seen in our nation. Though we are currently a nation in apparent decline, hopeful am I that we will soon rise again and regain our magnificence.”
Looking ahead, Trump encouraged his followers with a dramatic promise: “Everything could change on November 5th, a date that has the potential to become the most crucial day in our country’s history.” He concluded his statement with a rousing exhortation, “MAGA2024! See you all tomorrow.”
The jury selection procedure for Trump’s trial begins on Monday, following Bragg’s investigation into suspected hidden payments prior to the 2016 presidential election. This accused Republican front-runner for the 2024 presidential election appears in court for the first time this election season in New York City, vehemently rejecting all charges.
Judge Juan Merchan is overseeing these proceedings. Concerns about Merchan’s eligibility originate from his Democratic affiliations and purported animosity toward Trump. As a result, Trump’s legal team tried to disqualify Merchan from the trial and get him recused.
In April of last year, Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business documents. These were alleged secret payments made in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential race.
Bragg claimed that Trump “repeatedly and deceitfully tampered with New York business records to mask unlawful conduct that concealed potentially damaging details from the voters during the 2016 election.”
Bragg’s assertions include Trump’s “catch and kill” method for identifying, obtaining, and suppressing negative information about himself, which substantially improved his electoral prospects.
Furthermore, Bragg stated that Trump “went to extraordinary lengths to hide this conduct, causing a myriad of false entries in business records, in an effort to obscure criminal activities, some of which were attempts to breach both state and federal election laws.”
Overall, Trump’s trial is expected to be a watershed moment with far-reaching consequences, not only for the probable 2024 Republican presidential nominee but also for the political environment in the United States as a whole. The developments that follow will surely be worth following closely.
