Janitors hired to clean at Twitter‘s headquarters in San Francisco, California, called a strike to protest 20 employees being fired. In response, Elon Musk canceled their contract and fired the remaining janitors.
Musk’s detractors are outraged that he would fire the employees just weeks before Christmas. I would argue that you should never call a strike just weeks before Christmas, but maybe that’s just me.
“Our cleaning contractor at Twitter was told by Twitter that they are cutting the contract,” said the union president for the janitors, Olga Miranda. “So we have about 48 families out of work. And it just so happens that it’s three weeks before Christmas.”
According to a representative from SEIU Local 87, 20 janitors were told on Friday that they were fired without notice and that they were fighting for wages, “benefits and job protections.”
By Monday, the union and the remaining janitors had staged a strike in opposition to the terminations, alleging that the business had broken local cleaning laws. They stated that they had been locked out of the building as well.

Twitter canceled the contract with the janitors on Tuesday, prompting his detractors to accuse him of violating local laws.
The unemployed janitors were holding signs that read “proud to be union” and “justice for janitors” as they demonstrated in front of Twitter’s headquarters.
The California Labor Federation, which represents 1,200 California unions, condemned the action in a tweet.
The union tweeted out, “Twitter doesn’t seem to understand how important it is to keep a clean house and respect the people who take out the trash.”
Twitter indicates their new contractor will not be rehiring the janitors, despite obligation to rehire per county and state requirements.

I would argue that by firing the striking janitors, Musk actually took out the trash, but again, maybe that’s just me.
Other Twitter employees who were fired said they are suing Elon Musk after he fired them insensitively and caused them so much pain and anguish. What a bunch of snowflakes.
“The way Elon Musk executed the layoffs was really inhumane,” former employee Amir Shevat said.
The union going on strike was inhumane. The union tweeted out about how important it is to keep a clean house, but then they decided to turn their backs on the other Twitter employees who deserved a clean house. You can’t have it bother ways.
“He chose to fire so many of us during a difficult time period in the tech industry,” another former employee, Adrian Trejo Nunez, said.
They are suing for severance packages promised prior to Musk’s purchase of Twitter but never delivered to the fired employees.
