Worcester City Councilwoman Etel Haxhiaj was charged with assaulting an officer after inciting a mob to block ICE officers after she incited a crowdto block ICE agents from arresting a woman with a history of volence, including an attack on a pregnant woman. The Worcester Police Patrol Officers’ Union called for an ethics investigation into City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj called for an ethics investigation against the councilwoman.
Local and federal law enforcement were attempting to arrest Ferreira de Oliveira, an illegal immigrant accused of violent crimes, including assault with a dangerous weapon and assault on a pregnant woman, when Haxhiaj incited the crowd of about 25 people to block ICE from making the arrest. Haxhiaj is accused of participating in the protest and physically confronting officers on the scene.

City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj has been charged with one count each of assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with police during the controversial ICE showdown, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette first reported.
The Worcester Police Department sought three charges against Haxhiaj on May 12, according to court records made available on Wednesday, shortly after a district court clerk magistrate found probable cause to charge the councilor with two of the crimes during a closed-door meeting, the Telegram reported.
A Massachusetts police union is calling for charges against a City Councilmember who allegedly assaulted local and federal officers — and incited a caught-on-video chaotic protest of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrest of an accused violent criminal.
The aggressive protest saw as many as 25 neighbors wailing and chanting “no warrant!” and “not the mother!” — with the daughter of the apprehended Ferreira de Oliveira jumping in front of the unmarked ICE vehicle while holding her own infant in an attempt to stop the arrest, video showed.
Etel Haxhiaj, who represents Worcester’s District 5, helped incite the mob into assaulting ICE officers and cops during the Department of Homeland Security’s apprehension in a suburban neighborhood that escalated out of control Friday, the Worcester Police Patrolman’s Union said in a statement obtained by The Post.
“Etel Haxhiaj incited aggression towards the police during the incident. This councilor participated in the conduct of the unruly crowd and eventually assaulted both Worcester police and federal law enforcement officers on scene,” the union said in a statement. “Her behavior also emboldened others to act in this manner.
