President Donald Trump just dropped a bombshell on April 27: those tariffs he slapped on our so-called “trading partners”? Yeah, they’re about to turn into a major tax break for regular Americans, especially if you make under $200,000 a year.
Trump proudly made the announcement on Truth Social, likely grinning over a Diet Coke while CNN scrambled to spin it into a crisis:
“When Tariffs cut in, many people’s Income Taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated. Focus will be on people making less than $200,000 a year. Also, massive numbers of jobs are already being created, with new plants and factories currently being built or planned. It will be a BONANZA FOR AMERICA!!! THE EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE IS HAPPENING!!!”
And who exactly is getting the love here? Trump spelled it out: “Focus will be on people making less than $200,000 a year. Also, massive numbers of jobs are already being created, with new plants and factories currently being built or planned.” Translation: If you’re working hard and not spending weekends on your yacht, you’re about to win big.
Trump called it a “bonanza for America,” and honestly, when was the last time a president promised you a bonanza? Biden can barely promise coherent sentences.
VISIT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELThis whole move is part of Trump’s bigger plan to extend those sweet 2017 tax cuts — the ones everyone’s been dreading will expire this year. He’s also doubling down on his 2024 campaign promises — wiping out taxes on tips and keeping Social Security payments completely tax-free. Shocking concept, I know.
And just to keep everyone on their toes, Trump tossed another juicy idea during an interview with TIME Magazine, published April 25. He said he “love[s] the concept” of raising taxes on millionaires to fund the extension of the 2017 tax cuts. Yep, you heard that right — Trump flirting with the idea of hitting the rich where it hurts (their yachts and third vacation homes).
“I certainly don’t mind having a tax increase,” Trump told TIME. “I would be honored to pay more, but I don’t want to be in a position where we lose an election because I was generous, but me, as a rich person, would not mind paying, and you know, we’re talking about very little.”
Imagine that — a billionaire saying he wouldn’t mind paying more while Washington insiders clutch their pearls.
Trump spelled it out plain and simple: “take care of the middle class.”
“But I don’t want it to be used against me politically, because I’ve seen people lose elections for less, especially with the fake news.” Honestly, can you blame him? If Trump donated his whole net worth to charity, CNN would still run with “Trump Engages in Suspicious Acts of Charity.”
Meanwhile, Steve Bannon — former White House strategist and part-time chaos enthusiast — popped onto News Nation’s “CUOMO” show to throw his two cents in. And surprise: he’s all for it.
“This is being fought behind closed doors right now, and I’m telling you, with the massive tax cut, in addition, he’s going to give the working class and the middle class, the math only works out if you actually increase taxes on the wealthy,” Bannon explained, probably causing collective liberal panic attacks everywhere.
Bannon even suggested this could be Trump’s secret weapon if he — wait for it — decides to run again in 2028. (Cue the media screaming about the Constitution.)
Now, for some whiplash: the day after his TIME sit-down, Trump spoke to reporters at the White House on April 23 and sounded a bit cooler about taxing the rich, saying it could be “very disruptive” and might cause America to lose money. So… maybe don’t pop champagne about a billionaire tax just yet.
And then there’s House Speaker Mike Johnson, who popped up on Fox News basically waving a giant “NO TAX HIKES” flag.
“I’m not in favor of raising the tax rates because our party is the party that stands against that,” Johnson said on April 23, looking every bit like a man who has read the Republican Party’s tattooed-on mission statement.
He did admit potential strategies to lock in permanent personal income tax cuts in the Republicans’ final funding package. (probably fueled by cold pizza and Red Bull).
